Today 18 july 2024 is the remembrance day of Rajesh Khanna. I know (thanks to media coverage) that he passed away on this date, but it still comes as a huge surprise to me to realise that 12 years have gone by since that date. How time flies. It seems like yesterday when I was listening to Binaca geetmala final on the last wednesday of 1971, when almost every song that got played was picturised on Rajesh Khanna, including the number one song. Then I realise that 1971 was 53 years ago. More than half a century ago. The world has changed considerably from those days.

There are certain songs which leave a deep impression on your young mind. Some may leave a wonderful feeling or a bitter one, an emotional one or a physical one, etc. This song reminds me of a very dear friend who was also my classmate during my formative years (Intermediate and Bachelor’s degree).
This friend, we shall call him Sanjay, had a very strong liking to Kishore Kumar songs, while I had a strong affinity to the songs sung by Mohd Rafi saab. Similarly, he liked R D Burman’s compositions while I loved Laxmikant Pyarelal’s compositions. He had a special liking for tall, dark and handsome actors (Amitabh/Mithun C/Mahendra Sandhu/etc) while I preferred Fair skinned handsome heroes (Shashi/Rishi Kapoors/etc). But the competitive spirit never came in the way of our friendship. We used to be always together in anything and everything. We had a hell of a friendship going on for 5 years.

The cast included Rajesh Khanna, Zaheera and Raj Kapoor in main roles supported by Om Shivpuri, Pratima Devi, Tom Alter, V Gopal, Meena Roy, Vijay Sharma, Aarti, Lalita Kumari, Master Akbar etc. Nadira, A K Hangal, Jayshree T and Younus Parvez made the friendly appearances and Keshto Mukherjee, Padma Khanna and Deven Varma made guest appearances in the film. The film was released in the theatres on June 09, 1978. The film’s story was written by Salil Chowdhury who also provided the background music.

Hullo Atuldom
Beginning this post with a few thoughts that have been running through my head. What is the time or age to define something as old?
I have been observing people around me, for the last few years of my better half’s tenure, at his last workplace. I am saying “last workplace” as he has decided to call it a day; inspite of loving what he has achieved over the last 45 years. People consider him young enough to open up about their joys & sorrows. His colleagues cannot believe or don’t want him to hang his boots yet. Of course, I am very proud of all that his co-workers (he doesn’t call them subordinates) have to say about him.

The main cast consisted of Rajpal Yadav and Rituparna Sengupta in the lead roles with the supporting cast of Kay Kay Menon, Vinod Nagpal, Veena Mehta, Varun Bandola, Abdul Basir, Anil Rastogi etc. Nasiruddin Shah was a voice-over actor giving narrations.
