There has been very few Hindi films produced with the main theme of Indian classical dances. As far as I know, the first Hindi film with Indian classical dances as the main theme was Uday Shankar’s ‘Kalpana’ (1948) in which his wife, Amla Shankar was in the lead role of a classical dancer. This was followed by V Shantaram’s ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ (1955) in which his then future wife, Sandhya was in the lead role of a classical dancer along the Gopikrishna. Another Hindi film I remember is ‘Naache Mayuri’ (1986) which was more like a biographical film on the classical dancer, Sudha Chandran who lost her leg but continued her dancing career after lot of efforts. In this film, Sudha Chandran acted as herself.

There may be a few more films with the omnibus dance theme. I was aware of the film, ‘Paayal Ki Jhankaar, (1980) but, until recently, I did not know that this film was also made with the main theme of Indian classical dances. Perhaps, my mind about this film may have been prejudiced by another film with the same name released in 1968.

Today, September 18, 2025, is the 75th birthday of Shabana Azmi which is an important milestone in anyone’s life. I thought that on this occasion I should write an article on a film in which, in my view, Shabana Azmi has accepted a challenging role and has given a brilliant performance. The film I am covering in my article is ‘Morning Raaga’ (2004), a predominantly English language film in which Shabana Azmi’s role is that of a Carnatic vocalist.

‘Morning Raaga’ (2004) was produced by K Raghavendra Rao and was directed by Mahesh Dattani, a well-known personality in English theatre. The film was later dubbed in Telugu language with the title, ‘Raagam’ (2006). The cast included Shabana Azmi, Prakash Kovelamudi, Perizaad Zorabian, Lillete Dubey, Nasser, Ranjani Ramakrishnan, Vaishali Bisht, Shashi Sudigala, Sheela Naidu, Shaleen Sharma, Elahe Hiptoola etc. Prakash Kovelmudi is the son of Producer K Raghavendra Rao who is a producer-director, screenplay writer and an actor in his own right.

In this post I am again presenting a lesser heard song which may well be considered a rare song. This song is in the voice of Kishore Kumar. The movie is ‘Raani Aur Jaani-1973’. This seems to be a very obscure movie of its time. Though this movie made its debut on the blog long back in the year 2009 the movie still remains un-Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog.

“Raani Aur Jaani-1973” was directed by K.S.R. Dass for ‘P.N.R. Pictures, Madras’.This stunt movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.11.1973. The cast of this movie had Anil Dhawan, Aruna Irani, Jyoti Lakshmi, Narendra Nath, Jagdeep, Sulochana, Ramaprabha, Brahm Bharadwaj, Shetty, Coca Cola, Shekhar, Swaraj, Prem Kumar, Master Ripal Sapru, Baby Dally, Baby Charulata and others. Bindu had a special appearance in this movie.

‘Basera’ (1981) was produced by Ramesh Behl under his banner, Rose Movies and was directed by Ramesh Talwar. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee, Rekha, Poonam Dhillon, Raj Kiran, Iftekhar, A K Hangal, Sudha Chopra etc. The film was based on a Marathi novel written by Leela Phansalkar. In fact, Ramesh Talwar has directed IPTA play, Tanhaai’ (1971) based on this novel. It was decided to convert his IPTA play into the film, ‘Basera’ (1981).

The film is about two sisters who are wedded to the same man by a twist of fate. In an interview published in ‘Filmfare’, April 22, 2016, Ramesh Talwar had revealed that for the roles of two sisters, he had already finalised Rakhee. He told Rakhee that if she accepted the role of the younger sister, he would take Nutan for the role of elder sister. However, Rakhee preferred the elder sister’s role and suggested Rekha’s name for the younger sister’s role. After the separation of Rakhee and Gulzar, this was the first film with Rakhee in which Gulzar got associated as the screenplay, dialogues and song writer. Interestingly, Rekha, apart from her role as the second wife of Shashi Kapoor is also in the role of Raj Kiran’s mother, who in reality, is elder to her by 5 years.
