Today’s song is from the film Kaise Kahoon-1945.

The film was made by Pancholi Art Pictures, Lahore, owned by Dalsukh Pancholi. In those days, there were only 3 filmmaking centres of Hindi Films. Bombay, Calcutta and Lahore. Bombay made Hindi and Marathi films, Calcutta made Bangla and Hindi films and Lahore made Punjabi and Hindi films. Though the youngest was Lahore, in a short time, it had made some popular and hit Hindi films.

Today’s song is from the film Apni Chhaya-1950.

The literal meaning of this film title is ‘our own shadow’. However, after reading the film’s story, one wonders what way this title is related to what happens in the film /. This is not the only example. There are several such misleading or confusing film titles. Maybe the producers were fond of fancy titles irrespective of the film’s content. It is also possible that there were changes in the film story during the shooting and thus the relation between the film content and the film title deferred like Ravan and Bibhishan !

The film, made by Chitralaya Ltd. Bombay was ably directed by P.L.Santoshi – who also wrote the lyrics for this film. During this time period Santoshi was completely enamored with one of his Heroines – Rehana. When I saw Santoshi’s name as a director, I looked into the cast of the film, but did not find Rehana’s name in the list.

The cast of the film was Sulochana Chatterjee, Balwant Singh, Radhakishen, Sajjan, Mumtaz Ali (Mehmood’s father), Ramsingh, Dulari, Neelam, Jawahar Kaul and others. The music was mostly by Husnlal-Bhagatram, except 2 songs which were composed by Pt. Hanuman Prasad (he discovered Geeta Roy in 1946).

Today’s song is from the film Baraat-1942.

The film was made by Kirti Pictures, Bombay and it was directed by Dada aka V.M.Gunjal (25-1-1904 to 16-11-1968). The music was by the brothers Ratanlal and Khemraj – a pseudonym taken by Khemchand Prakash to hide his identity legally, because at that time he was under contract with Ranjit Studios from 1940 to 1945. This was an attempt by Khemchand to help Ratanlal learn and become an independent Music Director. However, it helped in a very little way.

Hullo Atuldom

Today is the birth anniversary (100th) of the legendary filmmaker, actor, choreographer of the 1950s & early ’60s. I found this article in today’s Times Of India.

As I was writing my previous post on Guru Dutt I came across this article on the internet. It spoke of K. Asif’s magnum opus “Love And God” which initially had Guru Dutt playing Qais (Majnu). But the movie halted with the death of the actor in 1964.

After a while K Asif revived “Love and God”; this time with Sanjeev Kumar playing Majnu (Qais). Nimmi was still Laila. The film again came to a halt with the passing of K. Asif in 1971, the film was about 70% complete.

Hullo Atuldom

I have undertaken a rather difficult task- writing a post to remember the legendary Guru Dutt & trying to pay a tribute to him in my own humble capacity as I am someone who got acquainted with the actor, director, producer, choreographer, and writer much after his time on this earth.

He was born on 9th July 1925, in Bangalore, to Shivashanker Rao Padukone who was a headmaster and a banker & Vasanthi, a teacher and writer. At birth he was called Vasant Kumar & his family was, essentially, Konkani Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins; but as his family shifted to Bhowanipore (Calcutta) when he was a child, he learnt & spoke fluent Bengali. (That possibly explains why I initially thought he was a Bengali). He had a sister Lalita Lajmi- (a painter) and 3 younger brothers, Atma Ram (a director known for ‘Umang’, ‘Aarop’ etc.), Devi (a producer known for ‘Masoom’, ‘Aakrosh’ etc.), and Vijay. Vasant Kumar’s name was changed to Gurudatta Padukone following a childhood accident, the belief being that it was an auspicious choice. Director & screenwriter Shyam Benegal is second cousin of Vasant Kumar a.k.a. as Guru Dutt & Amrita Rao (actress of the new generation) is the grand daughter of Guru Dutt’s cousin.
