Today’s song is a duet of Lata and Chitalkar, from Khazana-1951.

Duniya Gol hai ! It looks like I go round and round and round and somehow end up discussing C.Ramchandra songs every now and then !! Believe me, it is not intentional, but a coincidence. When I see a good song not yet posted here, I get tempted to discuss it. If it is a C Ramchandra song, then I admit that the urge to post it becomes simply irresistible !!!. It is not just because it gives me an opportunity to write about C Ramchandra , but I honestly feel that there is still so much to be said about C Ramchandra that I shall never feel short of material about him.

Readers from Gujarat must have heard the name of Shri Rajanikumar Pandya ji, a famous writer and winner of five awards from Sahitya Academy of Gujarat. One of the several books he has written on film people is “Aap ki Parchhaainyaan “.( He had gifted me this book). This book contains information derived from his personal interactions with several film greats like Nargis, Talat, Shamshad, Mubarak Begum, Jaikishen, Mukesh, Rafi, Composers Kalyan ji – Anand ji, Naushad, Anil Biswas, Hemant Kumar, Kavi Pradeep and a few more. In this book he has devoted 30 pages for his personal experiences with Jagmohan Sursagar ( Jaganmoy Mitra ). This is about the period close to two years when Jagmohan first stayed in his house and later elsewhere in Ahmmedabad. Today’s song is from the film Gharana(1961), a movie made by the famous Gemini Studios, Madras. The producer/director was S S Vasan- called the ‘Cecil B Demil’ of India, after his epic trend setter film Chandralekha way back in 1948. It was from this film that Hindi films started being made in south. In the beginning, it was only remakes of successful and Hit south films. Once this formula proved to be profitable, remakes of hit South Indian films began to constitute almost 80% of the Hindi films being made in south.

Today’s song is from a ( supposedly) crime thriller, ‘Detective'(1958).

The second half of the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s saw a host of crime, murder, mystery and ‘whodoneit’ type films. Hindi film industry is famous its “herd mentality” where trends get established after the success of films of certain genre. Once films of certain genre becomes a hit, most producers seek to make films on similar themes and stories.

Today’s song is a typical Kishore Kumar song from the film Jhumroo(1961). I have selected this song for two reasons. One, any song of Kishore Kumar-before the 70s- is loved by me and Two, this song has revived the memories of my college days.

Today’s song for discussion is from a film which is actually…according to some people…”out of Syllabus” for me. The film is Andaz Apna Apna – 1994 and the lovely duet is sung by Vicky Mehta and Behroze Chatterjee.

Today’s song is from a less heard film called Lal Batti-57. The film is making its debut on the blog with an extraordinary song, least expected from a composer who was known for melodious soft tunes based on either Raag or Robindra Sangeet….. Salil Chowdhari. The unlikely singers of this peculiar song are Shamshad Begum and Manna Dey.
