Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Coming into the 5th episode of the repeat song series. Here is an example of a straight and simple reuse, as is. The film is ‘Raja Kaka’ from 1973. And the famous drunkard song by Mukesh – from the 1960 film ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’, has been re-used in this film, without any changes or re-recording. As we listen to this picturization, it is clearly the original song that is simply being replayed in this film.

Missing Films of 1960s – 112
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Cricket is a distraction par excellence. 🙂 I am sure most of us bandwagoneers will agree.
That we are approaching the 151st century of songs on the blog, was being exchanged between Atul ji and myself for quite some days now. But the fact that we are also approaching the completion of the 4th millennium of no. of days of existence, almost went completely un-noticed by either of us. It was like just three or four days ago, that the tubelight came on in my mind. I immediately wrote to Atul ji. And equally immediately we agreed that we are on a threshold milestone that is more significant than the 151st century of songs.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
un aankhon mein neend kahaan
jin aankhon se preetam door basey. . .
It was October of 2017, a year and 8 months ago. The previous episode of this series was posted then. After that – this long gap. There have been many a sleepless nights in the intervening months. Yet, somehow I could not get back into the groove with this series. And actually, and inadvertently I should say, two songs that I was saving for this series, got posted otherwise, depleting my list of song. Anyhow, not an issue – the wealth of the Hindi film song still will reveal more songs for this category. 🙂
‘Ek Masoom’, a film from 1969, appears to be a film that likely took some time to get going, get completed and released. This film was rare and unavailable for decades, and it has been recently unearthed and then made available in public domain.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
This song has been suggested by Peevesie’w Mom ji, for inclusion in this series. Interestingly enough, the original song from the ‘Disco Dancer’ was posted on our blog by herself only, on June 16th, last year. Last year she has posted this on the birth anniversary of the prime protagonist of this song – Mithun Chakravarty.

A career that almost wasn’t at one time. His father, himself at the head of a famous film production company, did not want his own son to be associated with films and the film world. Maybe a very well intentioned direction to his offspring, knowing all the glittering and the sordid ins and outs of the industry. But then, destiny has its own will and its own ways to propel individuals in particular directions.

In some cases, it is the voice – some people will impress you, attract you with their voice. Girish Karnad’s voice has one of the most relaxing sound quality that I have heard. And his presence, his demeanor, his being in a scene, on screen or on stage, always had the same expression of comfort and relaxation as his voice. Seeing him, listening to him, one could never imagine if this person could be moved to a hasty or an impatient action.
He passed away, the day before. The news said that he was 82. I was surprised, it couldn’t be. Over the years since I had first seen him live in a drama in Delhi – almost a millennium ago, and then through films and media images, he always seemed to be the same, never changing, nor ageing. Be it the memories and images from the 60s, 70s, or even recent. He always appeared to be the same.

“हम तो डूबेंगे सनम, तुमको भी ले डूबेंगे।“
(“hum to doobenge sanam, tumko bhi le doobenge”)
(I will drown no doubt my dear, but will take you down with me.)
Some conversations, some words, touch a certain nerve inside that they simply cannot be forgotten. And some of them go even a step further. Some such words become so indelibly ingrained in the collective memory of a society that they end up becoming a part of the current lingua franca, an idiom that normal people begin to use in everyday conversations.

Today, 6th June, is the birth anniversary of Rajinder Krishan, one of the most prolific songwriters in Hindi cinema. As I looked up the date of birth, I find that he was born in the year 1919. So that makes today, the 100th birth anniversary for him.
A career that spans four decades in the industry saw a prolific output from his pen – close to 1700 songs, and story/screenplays and dialogues for many films. He made his debut in 1947 – as a songwriter for ‘Zanjeer’ (1947) and as a screenplay writer for ‘Janta’ (1947). He passed away in 1987, completing 40 years of active writing work in films, although films carrying songs written by him continued to be released till the early 1990s.
