While Helen rules the roost as the phenomena of the dance number in Hindi films, there came a phase in the 1960s and 70s, when a number of contenders stepped in to the arena of dance item exponents. As the dance number became progressively an important ingredient of the formula, especially a cabaret, and then especially in the ‘cloak and dagger’ type of films, the demand for dance item experts increased. To fill in a void that was probably beyond the bandwidth of Helen’s availability, the opportunities were taken up by actresses whose names became synonymous with sizzling dance numbers on the screen, and they made a place for themselves in the B/C grade films. The leaders in this group of actresses are Bela Bose, Faryaal, Lakshmi Chhaayaa, and JaishreeT. In their own right, these dancers have carved out a niche in the annals of Hindi films dance item.

Fareb (1968) is a social drama, produced under the banner of Shri Om Productions, Bombay and directed by Jugal Kishore. The movie is regarded as a B/C grade production with the star lineup that includes Dev Kumar, Faryal, Maruti, Bela Bose, N Ansari, Heeralal, Rajan Haksar, Kundan, Sushma, besides others.

“Kaanch Aur Heera” (1972) was a B grade movie produced by Sudarshan Chitra and directed by Charandas Shokh. The makers of this movie must have been great believers in winning lottery or stock market riches, seeing that they had staked the future of their movie on names like Pankaj and Shaheen. Yes, they were the lead actors in this movie. Other in the cast were Rajan Haksar, Kamal Kapoor, Manmohan etc.

It is the day of Raakhi festival (Raksha bandhan) today and we saw in one song that a man was lamenting the fact that he did not have a sister of his own. But it is not necessary for a man to have a real sister of his own for the purpose of rakhi. Indian mythology is full of tales of unrelated men being sent rakhi by women and they fougtht to protect the honour of their rakhi sisters. “Nadiyaa Ke Paar” (1982) was a quintessential Rajshri Productions movie. Like all Rajshri productions movies, this movie too was a low budget movie, made with less known actors, including newcomers. Like all other Rajshri productions movies, this movie too had outstanding music in it.
