“Madhosh”(1951) is a movie that had Manhar Desai, Meena Kumari and Usha Kiran in lead roles. Talat Mehmood sung for Manhar Desai, whereas Lata sang for both the leading ladies. Thankfully the two leading ladies did not sing a duet together, else we do not know what the music directors would have done. 🙂

I became aware of the movie “Heer Ranjha” (1970) in 1974, while going through movie magazines, which incidentally were supposed to be out of bounds for school kids barely in their teens. 🙂 But I was a kid who loved reading all kinds of publications, including screenplays of movies too. Yes, those days screenplays of movies used to get published too. I read screenplays of “Bobby” (1973) and “Aasheerwaad” (1968). I never watched these movies and I never thought that I missed anything by not watching them, that is how vivid the screenplays used to be.

“Madhosh” (1951) has one hero (Manhar Desai) and two heroines (Meena Kumari and Usha Kiran). In this movie, Manhar Desai got to lip sync in the voice of Talat Mehmood. The two leading ladies, who was seen to romance the same hero, were also made to lip sync in the same voice, viz that of Lata.

There are many songs in the movies that are for the children, and many of them are sung by children. The usual love stories constituted the bulk of storyline in mainstream Hindi movies of the past. The fact that history and mythology provided such rich sources of stories that could be used was not given much thought by mainstream movie makers. It was left to movie makers of smaller resources (makers of B grade movies) to make movies on such topics that were regarded as risky and unviable by mainstream movie makers.

When Madan Mohan began his career as a music director with “Aankhen” (1950), he used several singers and lyricists in that movie. Interestingly, Lata was not among those several singers. He began using Lata from his subsequent movies. And he also made use of less number of singers and lyricists in these movies.

In the golden era of Hindi movies, the storyline of most movies were of the tried and tested nature. Few movie makers would try to be different, because it meant takling risks and such risks rarely paid dividends at the box office.
