“Priyatma” (1977) was one of the lesser known movies of its time as far as I was concerned. IT turns our that it was a typical light hearted romantic comedy movie that were the hallmark of Basu Chatterji those days. This movie was a Modern Pictures Production. T C DEwan was the producer and it was directed by Basu Chatterji. The movie had Jeetendra, Neetu Singh, Rakesh Roshan, Asha Sachdev, Utpal Dutt, Reeta Haksar, I.S.Johar, Ritu Kamal, Murad, Sunder, Latika, Roshni, Ajay Kumar, Asrani, Deven Verma, Asit Sen, Jaya Prabha etc in it.

In the last few months, I must have listened to a large number of non-filmy songs (NFSs) on the internet especially those recorded in the 40s to 60s. While I was familiar with some of them from my younger days, others have been new to me. I enjoyed listening to most of the NFSs and I have shared on this blog a few of them. I am sure that If these NFSs were exposed to the listeners in a same way as Hindi films songs then they would have become equally popular. However, Majority of listeners of Hindi songs are the fan of film songs and there is no way NFSs could compete with Hindi films songs in the popularity chart. Of course there are exceptions to the rule.

Jamuna ke teer Kanha aa

In the sphere of Geeta Dutt’s non-filmy songs (NFS), I was aware of only one of her songs hauley hauley hawaayen doley during my younger days, thanks to the radio. Much later, I had bought 78 RPM record of this NFS sometime in early 70s. If I remember correctly, this record had ‘jamuna ke teer kaanhaa aao’ on the other side. So I became aware of one more NFS of her. Probably those days of early 50s, the singers will have to sing at least two NFS songs to bring out one 78 RPM record. With the advent of internet, we have access to some more of her NFS based on which I have a feeling that compared with other playback singers of her time like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh, Manna Dey etc, she has cut comparatively very few Hindi NFS discs. I found that none of her NFS other than the two I referred to above, were known to me though they are beautifully rendered by her. I have recently heard ‘ye hawaa ye fizaa ye bahaaren’ composed by V Balsara and I liked it very much.

Following the passing away of Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar recently on 11 Dec 2012, his phenomenally gifted first wife Annapurna Devi and his talented daughter Anoushka came under renewed focus. His eldest brother Padma Vibhushan Late Uday Shankar, an acclaimed dancer and choreographer of his day, was also very much in the mention.
