Ah, good to be back, and sincere apologies to all who may be wondering after all why does he start something and then seem to disappear. In simple words, not trying to make it sound like an excuse – personal bandwidth constraints and some higher priority write ups that must be done. This promised series took a back seat for many reasons. After having a start in late May, so far just four episodes appeared in the series, and then came a long hiatus. Rather the curiosity now is, what is going to be the ‘century’ special that will be served up with the milestone. 🙂

Forty two years ago, this day (12th Sept), life deserted a very flamboyant, and a very energetic young artist, who had consistently occupied the top rungs of creative music making and of course, popular following. Along with his senior partner, when they broke upon the Hindi film world with a ‘Barsaat’ of absolutely sublime melodies in 1949, here was an artist duo who made it good right from the word go. 1949 is a fantastic year, considering the musicals that hit the Hindi film screen. A year such as this one, has not quite been repeated in the history of Hindi film music. Some writers argue in favor of another year two decades hence i.e. 1968-69. But the year of 1949 is probably still the winner. Making a debut in this year, competing against some of the best music directors in their prime, it is a huge notable that this young duo, of which the younger one was still to breach his twentieth year, made such a melodious splash. And the audiences readily caught on to the lovely strumming of “Mujhe Kisi Se Pyaar Ho Gayaa”.

Yesterday I had posted a lovely duet song from the film ‘O Jaanewaale’ (1948). With reference to certain online resources, Mahesh ji wanted to check whether the music director behind this song is Pankaj Mullick. I was surprised to see this query. But I was able to unravel it quickly. Appears that the online resource that Mahesh ji referred to has an error. The name of the film is correct, but the remaining details are picked from a Geet Kosh entry that is one after this film. Hence the confusion. This is a careless error in transcription from the printed source to the web based page displays.

The Voice of Mukesh #30

‘O Jaanewaale’ is kind of an unheard film from 1948. Searching for the next installment in this series of Mukesh songs, I come across this film, which probably I would have simply overlooked otherwise. Produced under the banner of Navhind Pictures, Bombay, it is directed by S Sardesai. The star cast includes Geeta Desai, Trilok Kapoor, Umakant, Pande, Mehar Sultana, Manchi Thoothi, RB Rohini, and Master Chandrakant. The music of this film is by a music director whose name sounds totally unfamiliar – Ali Hussain Moradabadi, a name that appears on this blog for the first time today. The film has seven songs, penned by three poets by the names Kaifi, Mustafa an S Sardesai. However, there is no specific information that links a poet’s name to each song.

As we get to the close of today, 8th Sep, I believe we should not let the day pass without remembering another great artist whose birth anniversary also falls today. The creator of such wonderful and popular melodies like “Do Naina Tumhaare Pyaare Pyaare” (‘Shrimati ji’, 1952), “Girengi Bijliyaan Kab Tak, Jalenge Aashiyaan Kab Tak” (‘Sultaan e Aalam’, 1956), and “Ye Zameen Hamaari Ye Aasmaan Hamaara”(‘Zameen Ke Taare’, 1960) S Mohinder is also the name behind the music of such films as ‘Paapi’ (1953), ‘Shirin Farhaad’ (1955), and ‘Naata’ (1955).
