ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 1
———————————————————————

I have not been active either on the blog, or on whatsapp groups for quite a while now. Earlier this year I developed a health issue and had to go through a surgical procedure. Things are fine now though 🙂 . Catching up on all the work pending for the last few months.

Let me now get to the post that I would like to contribute.

10 years, that is a decade. . . the “BIG X”. What a journey this has been! Still remember how one fine day, by sheer accident, I stumbled upon this amazing blog, and made my way to the first post that was made – the song “Miley Na Phool Toh Kaanton Se Dosti Kar Li” by Rafi sahab for the film ‘Anokhi Raat’ (1968), starring Parikshit Sahni. Then the next song if I remember correctly was “Tum Agar Mujhko Na Chaaho Toh Koi Baat Nahi” by Mukesh Sahab for the movie ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963), sung on screen by Raj Kapoor and he sings it to the cute and gorgeous Nutan 🙂 .

ज़िंदगी हो भी तो जैसी तुम्हारी थी, वैसी हो॰ ॰ ॰ कोई अच्छा था तो वो भी दोस्त था, कोई अच्छा नहीं था तो भी यार ही था। A big heart such as yours is a rarity in humans.

The first line of the song and the mind is tuned in for another gem of a creation from Chitragupt. This next song in this series is vintage Chitragupt.

The film is ‘Police Detective’ from 1960. The melody was still the reigning empress, and the creators of the likes of Chitragupt were still at their inspired best. Such a lovely playful song of two hearts in love, expressing their hearts to each other.

Today’s song is from an almost unknown film ‘Haqdaar’ (1946).

There were two more films with the same title, made in 1964 and 1981. The love of Hindi films for identical titles is well known. In silent films, the situation was different. There used to be one name for Censor Certificate and then in every linguistic state the film would have one local name for the film, to attract local audience. In talkie films, this facility was absent, as everywhere, the film name is the same.

A recent anniversary that I had been preparing for – and missed on account of some travel engagements – is the remembrance day for the exceptional poet and lyricist – Bharat Vyas. He passed away in 1982, on 5th July.

The mention of this name brings to mind names of films such as ‘Chandralekha’ (1948), ‘Rim Jhim’ and ‘Saawan Aaya Re’ (both 1949), ‘Janamashtami’ and ‘Hamaara Ghar’ (both 1950), ‘Parineeta’ (1953), ‘Do Aankhen Baraah Haath’ and ‘Amar Singh Rathod’ (both 1957), also ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’ from 1957, ‘Samraat Chandragupt’ (1958), ‘Bedard Zamaana Kya Jaane’ and ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnaai’ (1959), ‘Navrang’ and ‘Raani Roopmati’ (again 1959), ‘Angulimaal’, ‘Veer Durgadas’ and ‘Saaranga’ (all 1960), ‘Jai Chittod’ and ‘Pyaar Ki Pyaas’ (1961), ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan’ (1963), ‘Boond Jo Ban Gayi Moti’ (1967) – and many more films with many a memorable song.

Presenting the next episode in this series. The film is a standard family drama from the still sedate 1960s, and the fever of disco was still hidden in far horizons. The film is ‘Bhai Behen’ from 1969. The lead pair of Nutan and Sunil Dutt, with a better part of two decades of careers behind them, still look handsome and comely.

Today’s song is from a very old film, ‘Himalay Ki Beti’ from 1938.

It is generally said that in this era, most actors and actresses came from poor families and most artists had no or had negligible education. While it is true to a great extent, it is not 100% true. It is not that even in this period, there were no educated persons in the film industry. Right from the beginning of the silent era to talkie film era up to the end of the 1940s decade, there were actors, actresses, directors, producers and musicians who were quite educated. Some of them had even been trained in western countries.

Missing Films of 1960s – 77
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

For quite some time, I was missing this film, thinking of the film ‘Poonam Ki Raat’, a 1965 film with music by Salil Chaudhry that is already Yippeee’d here on our blog. Careful scrutiny of the list prepared by Khyati Ben, brings me back to this film from 1967 – ‘Poonam Ka Chaand’.

Hullo Atuldom

I know of two movies that go by the name ‘Duniya’. One was in 1968 which had Dev Anand and Vyjayantimala in the lead and the second ‘Duniya’ (1984) had Dev Anand’s contemporary Dilip Kumar with Ashok Kumar in central roles around which Rishi Kapoor and Amrita Singh’s characters were built.

Today’s song is from film ‘Kunwara Baap’ (1942).

Hindi film industry is a funny place. Great stories of the world fail when made into films and some ‘made to order’ stories become so successful films that the subsequent film makers copy the films, with slight alterations. Sometimes identical titles have nothing in common and sometimes remakes are made with different titles – not matching the original one in any way.
