Mukesh and his Composers – 3
———————————
The off-screen romance between Dev Anand and Suraiyya was well known. On-screen, if there was any song which symbolized the relationship it was this romantic duet from Vidya 1948 sung by Mukesh and Suraiyya.
Hold on. Mukesh giving playback for Dev Anand?. Well, yes, there were 3 occasions in which this rarity occurred. A solo and a duet in Vidya and a duet in Shair with Lata under Ghulam Mohammed.

The Voice of Mukesh #69
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Such discoveries do not happen often. Finding unknown songs that one is not aware of. Today is one such occasion, and this Mukesh song is one such song. And the credit for searching it out and sending it to me, goes to Mahesh ji Mamadapur. A simple email from him yesterday – saying that he has found a song online that he cannot locate on the blog. Since we have definitely covered and accounted for, all songs of Mukesh till the mid 1950s, how come this song from the 1948 film ‘Mera Munna’ does not appear on our blog? I scrambled to check, and I found the following.

Recently, I read ‘In the Company of a Poet – Gulzar in Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir’ (2012). The book gives a bird’s eye view on the life of Gulzar – from setting his foot in Bombay (Mumbai) in mid-1950 to his continuing association with Bollywood. Before reading this book, I was under the impression that, like many others who came to Bombay to fulfill their aspirations to work in Bollywood, Gulzar was one of them. It was not so as revealed from his conversations in the book. Gulzar came to Bombay not by his own choice but as a part of his father’s plan to divide the financial responsibility of his large family following his post-partition migration from Dina (in Pakistan) to Delhi.

Mukesh and his Composers – 2
——————————————
Mukesh started his singing and acting career in 1940. Madan Mohan started his composing and singing career a decade later in 1950. His first film Aankhen had some interesting trivia.
• Meena Kapoor sung her only song for Madan Mohan, the beautiful “Moree Atariyaa Pe Kaagaa Bole Moraa”.
• Madan Mohan himself sang a duet with Shamshad Begum.
• Raj Khosla, the famous director and producer has sung a rail song in this movie.
• Lata Mangeshkar was not part of this debut movie of Madan Mohan’s.

Mukesh and his Composers – 1
———————————
Naushad, Madan Mohan and SD Burman were some of the many music directors who composed songs for Mukesh. So why am I singling out these three great composers only? Read on.
I personally like to club these composers in one category as they have Mukesh songs in their initial films, but later on had huge gaps in terms of years before they accommodated him again albeit for a few songs. I would like to write three short posts on each of the combos.

R D Burman composed over 1700 songs in Hindi movies. Only 19 of these songs had the voice of Mukesh in them.
When I came across this figure yesterday (it is mentioned in the book -R D Burman- the man the music), I looked in the blog and also searched the list of R D Burman songs in HFGK.

“Maaya Jaal”(1962) aka “Jaadoogar” was a partially colour film (which was usual for movies of that era). This movie was directed by Babubhai Mistry for Rajhans Pictures, Bombay. This quintessential B grade movie had Ranjan, Chitra, Manhar Desai, Krishna Kumari, Pal Sharma, Mumtaz Begam, Nazeer, Shree Bhagwan, Maruti, Radhika etc in it.

The Voice of Mukesh #68
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The phase of Mukesh’s career in the years from 1954 to 1957 makes a very ineffectual reading. In these four years, the number of songs sung by him in each year did not even touch the double digit numbers. After recording 10 film songs in 1953, the numbers for subsequent years are – 6 for 1954, 9 for 1955, 7 for 1956 and 5 for 1957. It was only in 1958 that these numbers pulled themselves back into double digits – he recorded 13 songs in 1958. But all said and done, the equations had changed, by the time 1950s came to a close.

The Voice of Mukesh #67
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The journey following the songs of Mukesh now enters 1955. As we come into the time period of mid fifties and later, we are going to find more and more songs being already posted. The songs that are remaining now are the ones which mostly are obscure, and less heard earlier. But there is fun in filling the gaps. And if this song is something to go by, it is a lots and lots of fun.
