Today’s song is from film ‘Shahenshah Babar’ (1944).

Hindi film makers seem to have an attraction for Mughal Empire. Films were made on life events of right from Babar to Bahadurshah Zafar- the first to the last Mughal kings. I do not know what the film makers found so magnetic in their lives. Not only Mughal kings, but also the Mongol king Changez khan, Nadir Shah and generals like Behram Khan also became the subject matters of films. May be the producers found lot of scope to show big palaces, big armies, wars, dances and songs, beautiful women etc. in such films which attracted the audience.

‘Pooja Ke Phool’ from 1964, is a production from AVM, Madras. It is directed by A Bheemsingh. True to the colors of the family dramas emanating from the south, this film is not much different that the regular run-of-the-mill emotionally loaded films coming from there. This film however has a slight sinister twist, in that a murder is part of the storyline. There is a certain amount of drama built around the trial in the court and the effort to nail the true culprit – a task that is made extremely challenging by the fact that the hero Shankar (roled played by Dharmendra) repeatedly asserts in the court that he admits his guilt and should be punished. The heroine Shanti (role played by Mala Sinha) who is the lawyer defending Shankar, has her work cut out for her, to get the hero freed, when he himself doesn’t want to be.

चाँदनी रातें प्यार की बातें

खो गई जाने कहाँ

That is the very first introduction to this extremely versatile actress of the Hindi cinema. The song was played in the weekly Chitrahaar program one evening. And the kid me was soaking in the performance with an open mouth and extreme ignorance of the emotions being dealt with. The primeval image carried in was that of a serious actress given over to sad roles and sad songs. Little did I know that I couldn’t have more further from reality.

Remembering Geeta Bali, the actress extraordinaire, on the anniversary of her passing away (21st Jan).

What a find – this song. A lovely tuneful song, sung by Asha Bhosle, and on screen performed by Sheila Ramani. Aah yes, the memorable danseuse of those lovely lilting songs of ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954).

The film is ‘Aawaara Ladki’ from 1967. The Geet Kosh carries very limited information for this film, in the print volume IV. The production company is listed as Skyland Productions, Bombay. The music director is Dhaniram. Two songwriters are listed – Rajnikant and Kaif Irfani. This song is penned by Kaif Irfani.

The movie “Pyaar ka mausam” is a nice package of beautiful songs. It has less songs than other Nasir Hussain movies, but then all of them are good quality songs.
