BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50S (Pushp- 6)
————————————-
I remember that we had just shifted to our new flat in 1984. It was a spacious building, with plenty of open space all around and at the rear side there was some big open space enough for a Badminton Court and a small garden along the compound wall. This open space was sometimes used by the residents for small functions and private parties. One day, one of our neighbours, Mr. Markan, invited my family for a programme of ” Mata’s Jagaran “, which he was holding before his son’s marriage. Jaagaran is a programme, running through almost the whole night, singing Mata’s ( Devi’s) bhajans, doing Pooja etc. This was our first such experience and we accepted the invitation with excitement.

One of my pet grouses against Hindi movies is that they do not lay stress on working for a living. Hindi movies show people either romancing their beloved or singing sad songs when separated by the beloved. And those who do not indulge in such activities are shown remonstrating with the almighty for their misfortune. Hindi movie characters are rarely shown working for their living.

BHAJAN MALA- GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-5)
————————————-
Do you remember which story you liked the most in your childhood ? When we were in school, we read lot of stories. Stories from Mythology, History, Magic, Mystery, Birbal, Tenaliram, Tarzan etc etc. We liked some stories, and did not like others. To me, barring Alladin, Alibaba and Sindbad, all stories of Arabian Nights were same. Stories from Vedas were hard to remember due to difficult names like Jamadagni, Jaratkaru or Yadnyawalkya etc. My favourite story was that of Alladin, which I would read repeatedly at frequent intervals.

BHAJAN MALA-GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-2)
——————————–
Culture and Religion have a close relationship. The commonest points of Religion, followed by a majority for time immemorial, becomes culture of the nation. Raas Garba, Ganesh Utsav, Diwali celebrations and Indian Calendar New Year days in respective regions are no more a matter of Religion by now. They have become the cultural heritage of the country. A good example is Holi or lighting done on Deepavali or touching the feet of the elders…all these constitute Culture, though its roots are traceable to religion.

When I first saw Chetan Anand’s ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964), on TV, I was a pre teen kid, not old enough to really appreciate the human pathos and the emotions involved in the storyline. But of course, there are a few passages and images that simply stuck to my mind. Randomly they would pass through the mind’s screen. This would continue for many, many years till the time I revisited the film, and then sat through it for a complete view. This was after I had read a lot about this film, its background, its actors, and its impact on the public mind during those troubled war years of 1960s and early 1970.
