How many people are aware of a movie called “Ek Nazar” ? People may not be aware of such a movie, but there were in fact not one but two movies of such a name. One was released in 1957 and it had a few nice Talat Mahmood songs under the music direction of Ravi. Then there was another movie of this name in 1972, and it too had a nice song, which is the song under discussion here.

I am a big fan of Ravi, the underestimated music director of the golden era of Bollywood movie music. He was an extremely prolific music director who began his career in 1950s and worked upto 1990. And he has left us countless great songs, many of them timeless classics. In fact, most iconic songs of Bollywood have been his creations.

O P Nayyar was one music director who reached the top without using Lata’s voice. He groomed Asha Bhonsle and he was responsible for her singing style.

I have posted one song from “Gambler”(1970) in the past. Somhow I keep confusing among the songs of “Gambler”, “Guide”, “Prem Pujari” etc. All these movies had Dev Anand and Waheeda Rahman in them, if I am not mistaken, and all these movies had music by S D Burman.

Dilip Kumar was known as tragedy king during the days I was growing up, but he would act in non tragedy roles too, though I was not aware of that in my younger days. And moreover, He was from the earlier generation, and I was growing up with the next generation of heroes ( Rajesh Khanna etc).

I was aware of a movie called “Bhai bhai” released in 1940s, but I never knew that a movie of the same name was made in 1970 too. This 1970 movie must have done really poorly at the box office to be so unknown.

In 1950s and 1960s, most leading actors stuck to the some particualar playback singers, whose voices, they thought suited them. Thus we had Mukesh singing for Raj Kapoor, Rafi singing for Shammi Kapoor etc.

Though most Bollywood songs in 1950s were based on desi music ( classical and folk music), western music were also being introduced those days. C Ramchandra was one of the main pioneers who introduced western music in Bollywood. Another such pioneer was N Dutta.

In 1950s, there used to be movies named after important landmarks viz “Laal Quila’,”Chandni Chowk”etc. In this series, there was one movie called “Gateway of India” (1957).

I keep confusing among movies with names like “Pyaar Muhabbat” “Jawaan Muhabbat” “Pyaar Deewaana” etc. With great difficulty, I remind myself that one had Dev Anand, and another had Shammi Kapoor, and yet another had Kishore Kumar. Now which movie had which actor is something I cannot recall with any certainty.
