It may be unimaginable today for the present generation, but when India became independent over six decades ago, the country was industrially undeveloped and there was hardly any infrastructure to speak of. Here is a mourning song from “Batwaaraa” (1961). No one had died. It is the age old relations that have are getting severed though. The two brothers, who lived under the same roof, now want to partition the home as they cannot see eye to eye with each other. So a wall is being erected right in front of the courtyard to partition the house into two.
