There are people who like to go to party. What exactly do they do in the party ? If they are like the party goers in Bollywood songs, most of them just stand like statues when the hero is hogging the limelight, singing a song. Except hero, everyone else seems discomfited. Even the heroine is not at ease, because the contents of the song are either praising her or cursing her, and in either case, she feels mightily embarrassed.

Madan Mohan not only got the best out of Lata, he did that with other singers as well. In fact, he had the knack of getting the best out of every singer he worked with, because he had the ability to guage the range of the singer’s voice and he would tailor his music accordingly. Thus we have singers as varied as Lata, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh,Talat Mahmood, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder etc singing some of their most memorable songs under Madan Mohan.

I had once wondered what I would do if I run out of all Rafi-Shammi songs. Then I realised that I need not worry. In case I have no more Rafi-Shammi songs to listen to, I always had the option of listening to the songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor clones. And these songs sounded just as good. There was Joy Mukherjee ( similar in appearance to Shammi Kapoor ans sometimes nearly as good) and there was also Vishwajeet ( smaller built and therefore described as poor man’s Shammi Kapoor).

What can one say about the music of “Teesri Manzil” that has not been said ? It was the launch pad of R D Burman as a formidable music director in Bollywood music industry. The songs, all of them, broke new ground. Rafi and Asha Bhonsle were magical in this movie. Majrooh Sultanpuri came up ith some wonderful lyrics.

“Brahmachari” had so many wonderful songs, including a few immortal song. Even those songs that are not all that immortal can still be regarded as memorable, even though these songs were composed as time pass songs.

Shammi Kapoor figured with Asha Parekh in more movie than with any other actresses. They were together when Shammi Kapoor’s star was rising, and they were together when Shammi Kapoor’s star was setting. And of course, they were together when Shammi Kapoor was at the top.

I may not be the only person to note that majority of songs in Bollywood are about love. In these songs, the lead actors would fall in love and then sing love songs.
