I had not watched any movies in movie halls between 1972 to 1978. When I joined college and with that got the freedom to do what I pleased, I went on a movie watching spree with a vengeance, as if to make up for the lost time. I would watch all the movies that were released in the city, except “low brow” stuff that got released in old and remotely located movie halls.

A few days ago when it was Lata Mangeshkar’s birth anniversary on 28 september 2016, I posted a Lata writeup, where I mentioned that we have been discussing a Lata song almost on a daily basis right from the beginning of this blog 8 years ago. I knew that we had more than 3070 Lata songs in the blog. I became curious to find out the number of days for which this blog is active. At first I decided to do the calculation manually, but then decided that I should let technology do the hard work for me. So, after some trial and error, I got just the excel formula that I needed. It was then that I realised that the blog was 2994 days old at that time. I mentioned this fact in the blog. I also realised that we were very close to 3000 days mark. So I contacted a few regulars of the blog and requested them for their special writeups on the occasion.

Wow and wow, what a song. Same story, same pattern – production house is obscure, film is obscure, actors not so well accepted as grade A material, music director not so well recognized as top of the line. And that is where we find some the most titillating gems of music. Under different circumstances, this song could have been top of charts. E.g. if this song was performed on screen by, say, Shammi Kapoor, well then it would have been treated as a hit, and would have found its place in the listings of timeless classics of Rafi Sb’s fun songs.

It would be an interesting exercise, to do a series of songs, wherein one song is introduced through another song. So many times it happens, a song starts to play, and the mind automatically thinks of another song that expresses similar emotions. I am sure we will be able to list numerous such pairs. There is after all, only so many emotions that the human mind plays with. It is the poet’s mind that will express the same thought in a huge variety of combinations of words.

“भूला हुआ फसाना हमको ना था सुनाना

As I continue to search for songs for this series, I continue to keep getting surprises. I keep uncovering uncommonly wonderful gems that either I have not heard before, or keep bumping into songs that are memories from long ago, but not heard for a long time. Today’s song is one that I am encountering for the first time. Searching for a good song starting with today’s alphabet, as I was trawling through the folders of Rafi Sb songs on my hard disk, I found this gem a few days ago. A gem that I had not heard before. The year is 1966. This song should have been in memory banks from radio listening days. But no, I do not recall having heard it before.

बहारों ने छेड़ा खुशी का तराना

The antecedents of this song are somewhat peculiar. As per available information, this song is listed in the Geet Kosh for the film ‘Aansoo’, an unreleased film from 1970s. Also, as I checked for online availability, I find that this song is posted for the film ‘Majboori’, that is listed for the year 1986. I went back and double checked other songs which are listed in the Geet Kosh for the unreleased film ‘Aansoo’, and sure enough, the songs listed in Geet Kosh figure in the film ‘Majboori’. The most likely scenario is that the film was started sometimes in the 1970s, with the title ‘Aansoo’, and the songs were created and released under that film name. The film would have been delayed inordinately, and finally found its release almost a decade later in 1986, albeit under a different title – ‘Majboori’.
