#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 64# Singer – Kishore Kumar
———————————————–—————————-

In my opinion, Kishore Kumar’s voice reached a different and special plane altogether during late 1960s as compared to his voice prior to earlier years i.e. pre ‘Padosan'(1968) and ‘Aradhana’ (1969). He retained that “something special” in his voice for the rest of his career. His voice was at its versatile peak during this phase of his career.

Noted film director and story / screenplay writer OP Dutta, passed away this day five years ago. He was 90 years when he passed away in 2012.

OP Dutta was born in the town of Gujranwaala in Punjab (now in Pakistan), in 1922. No information is available online about his early years and his education. In 1948, when he was just 26 years old, he directed the film ‘Pyar Ki Jeet’. This film was a major success, and it established Suraiya, the singer-actress as a super star.

He continued to direct films till the end of 1950s. The Hindi films directed by him are – ‘Hamaari Manzil’ (1949), ‘Surajmukhi’ (1950), ‘Ek Nazar’ (1951), ‘Parbat’ (1952), ‘Maalkin’ (1953), ‘Lagan’ (1955), and ‘Aangan’ (1959).

Missing Films of 1960s – 53
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Lal Lal Gaal. . .

I know I do not need to say more. Everyone is so familiar this song. And the special thing about this song? In my humble opinion, this probably is the fastest melody that any music director has got Rafi Sb to sing. The year is 1957 and the film – ‘Mr X’.

And then, this same music director, ten years later, has got the booming voice Mahendra Kapoor to sing the softest of the melodies – “Chaand Bhi Koi Deewaana Hai. . .”. The year is 1968 and the film – ‘Apna Ghar Apni Kahaani’.

Remembering N Datta – well quite late for his anniversary (both of which fell in December). And so this post has also been in the making, for well about a month.

ना ये चाँद होगा

ना तारे रहेंगे
मगर हम हमेशा तुम्हारे रहेंगे

A promise of a voice, that continues to remind, of a feeling, of a little tangy flavored honey, slipping down the taste buds in the rear of the tongue. A voice that is sweet, that is humble. It may haunt you, but it will never come to you as an onslsught; it surely will over power your heart, but more in the manner of a polite request saying “Naa Jaao Sainyaan Chhuda Ke Bainyaan. . .”.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 3

‘इ’ – इस जग में कहीं भी रहियो

मेरी आवाज़ के पीछे चले आओ
चले आओ
चले आओ॰ ॰ ॰

Aah, only if it were possible in this physical world. The only recourse is to listen to the recordings. That charisma is going to remain alive, till the time there is music on this earth. The magic of Rafi Sb’s voice will never cease.

Today is the eighty fourth birth anniversary (9 Jan 1934 – 27 Sep 2008) of singer Mahendra Kapoor. On this occasion today, I present this lovely and haunting song from the 1966 film ‘Naag Mandir’ here on our blog. This song has two versions one sung by Mahendra Kapoor and another sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

‘Naag Mandir’ was directed by Shantilal Soni for Mayurkala Pictures, Bombay. The star cast was led by Mahipal, Vijaya Choudhry and included Indira and BM Vyas.

dekh hamen awaaz na dena
o bedard zamaane. . .

The saga of the filmland, the dizzying ups, and the ignominious lows; the crush of fans and lovers, and the loneliness of the nether years; the happy days of spring of success, and the cold desolate days of the winters of anonymity; the words of love and music, and the silent conversations with the past, waiting for a sound. Such is the tale of many an artist that applied their lives to this film world. The whirl of the merry go round does never stop, but comes a day that one cannot hold on – and then what remains is the nausea, the vertigo of having stepped off a speedy whirlwind.

In my previous article on the song “Kat Gayi Waadon Mein“, I have talked about Mulkhraj Bhakri, writer, producer and lyricist from the Lahore film industry, who became one of the many victims of the country’s partition in 1947 . In Bombay (Mumbai), due to his hard work, he regained his position in the Hindi film industry.

In this article, I propose to talk about one more victim of partition who was born with a silver spoon in a Gujarati family settled in Karachi and actively connected with the Lahore film industry in the 1940s. I am not talking about Dalsukh M Pancholi but director, Ravindra Dave who happened to be his nephew. Let me unfold Ravindra Dave’s story.

Remembering Geeta Dutt.

She passed away 45 years ago on 20th July in 1972, brining to close a tumultuous and tragic life, all of 41 years. A voice that held so much promise, and yes, she gave too, so many wonderful gems to remember her by. Just going by the numbers – the decade of 1950s carries close to 850 songs sung by her. And then, in the 1960s, she has recorded less than hundred. And the majority of them belonging to the first half of the decade.
