Today’s song is from an obscure film Ranee-43, which was a Bi-lingual film made by Calcutta’s Barua Productions.
The film was directed by P C Barua and the music was by Kamal Dasgupta. Barring a few big movies, the Hindi-Bangla bilingual films did not become as successful as their Bangla versions. I feel the reasons were mainly two. One was that the cast of such films consisted of most names, with which the Hindi audience was not familiar. The second point was the style of acting and the dialogue delivery of the Bangla actors was deemed strange in Hindi belt. The Hindi used in films made in Bengal was too pure to be of the liking of people who were used to Hindustani language. The audience preferred ” pyar or muhabbat ” to ” prem “, for example.

Bhaari bhaari meena kumari
ghar mein jaa ke maara maari
This was the sales pitch sh’air by some urchins in Mumbai local trains, selling small items like hairbands, hair clips, fancy earrings, finger rings and combs etc. I have had an highly educating experience of travelling in local trains on regular basis from 1988 to 1994, during peak hours, traversing the length and breadth of Mumbai on central, western and harbor lines. The sales pitch and the bol bachchan street seller’s ingenuity in using colourful simile’s, in the present song reminded me of the long forgotten ditty above. (bhaari means costly or rich in mumbaiyya)

Today’s song is from the film Beti-1941.
In India, most people want a Son and not a daughter, but the thinking of film makers seems to be different. From 1931 to 2012 period, only one film titled BETA was made in 1992, whereas there were 3 films titled BETI, made in 1941, 1957 and 1969. there was also one film called BETI NO. 1 made in 2000. Interestingly, while there was a film called BETA HO TO AISA in 1994, there was also a film called BETI TUMHARE JAISI in 1969. As if a compromise was done, there was a film BETI-BETE in 1964 (here also BETI came first). I am happy about this because, hopefully, it indicates where the Indian society is heading to !

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No.59

As was the wont those days ten years ago, six songs were discussed in the blog, in chronological order of their release. The first song, from 1951 was covered first and gradually the other songs were covered in chronological order. The first song was posted at 9 :12 AM and the sixth at 9:58. So by the then prevailing standards of the blog, I may have woken up late. 🙂

This post is likely the one which has been the most scrambled for. Leap day it is. So much history and folklore around this date, no doubt. But notwithstanding that, it struck us quite late in the day, as to how such a rare occasion be not celebrated, and not represented on our blog. “Amardeep” was a movie that was made by Shivaji Productions and directed by T. Prakash Rao in 1958. It was a remake of the Tamil “Amara Deepam” (1956) which also directed by T. Prakash Rao; which itself was a remake of the 1942 English film “Random Harvest” which was based on the novel of the same name by James Hilton. There was also a Bengali movie in 1957 “Harano Sur” on the same story. (all this information is thanks to Wikipedia) So that means there were audiences for this kind of sentimental stories.
