Hindi Songs in Bangla Films : 34
———————————-
‘Jalsaghar’ [(1958), Music Room] was Satyajit Ray’s third film (4th film in terms of the date of release). After the box office failure of his second film, ‘Aparajito’ (1957), Satyajit Ray decided to make a popular film which would cater to the taste of Bengali audience. ‘Jalsaghar’. the short story of Tarashankar Bandopadhyay was the basis for the film which had the popular subject of the declining fortunes of zamindars (landlords) who patronized arts and music. So, there would be scope for songs and dances which would attract the audience.

Sai Paranjpye has so far directed 8 feature films in Hindi. She has written story and script for all these films. Each of these films has some interesting background as to what prompted her to make those films. In this article, I am covering her film ‘Saaz’ (1997) which was produced by Amit Khanna under the banner ‘Pulse Films’ of the Plus Channel of which he was the managing director during 1989-2000.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

By now, I must have watched/heard about 20 Hindi songs from the Bangla films of 1950s-1970s. I have a feeling that there may be a few more Hindi songs in Bangla films which I have yet to explore.

A question came to my mind as to why some Bengali film directors have fascination to incorporate Hindi songs in Bangla films. Is it something to do with realism or the personal preferences of the film directors? After watching some of the videos of the Hindi songs in Bangla films, I have come to the conclusion that it is for the realistic depiction of the situations in the films. Almost, all the Hindi song situations in Bengali films that I have so far watched, belongs to semi-classical genre. The Hindi song situations mostly comprises of mujra dances, a teacher of Hindustani classical vocalist rehearsing with his student, actors in the role of Hindustani classical vocalists giving stage performances etc.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I simply love this app called YouTube on the internet, and when Rajaji reads this he will agree that YouTube is a lovable app. This app has a feature whereby after you finish seeing a video or song, it suggests similar songs which might match what you have just seen in genre etc. And it gives some very good suggestions.

Missing Films of 1960s – 90
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What a wonderful gem of a song this one is. The memory banks hold this from the radio listening days. Such a beautiful semi-classical creation, and also very popular in its time – I am amazed it has waited so long in the wings to make its place here on our blog.

[Dated 06 Aug, 2018]

Yesterday I was NOT on earth, for more than four hours . Now I know how joyful it will be in Heaven. I was a VIP guest at Jaidev’s 100 year Birthday celebration organised by by Hariharan and Chhaya Ganguli. I had full one and a half hours on back stage with artists and even was given a centre first row seat.

During that heavenly program Jaidev’s creations were presented by Hariharan, Penaaz Masani, Vibhavari Joshi,  Mahalakshmi Iyer and Suresh Wadkar.  Many luminaries like Shivkumar Sharma, Amol Palekar, Ashit Desai (who conducted the 20 piece orchestra for all the singers) etc talked about their association with Jaidev.

An interesting observation regarding the Yippeee process for the film that is getting Yippeee’d today. Regular readers would have noticed a pattern in the manner that the films are getting Yippeee’d these days. Generally, in the case of films with just two or three songs remaining to be posted, the last two (or last three) songs kind of appear at a very rapid pace, almost on a daily basis, one right on top of the other. With such films, the penultimate one (or two) songs appear in quick succession followed by the final song of the film, on the next day.
