Yesterday, 24^th February, a living legend of Indian cinema turned 88. From his pen have come such haunting songs as “Kho Diye, Hain Sanam, Teri Talaash Mein, Pichhle Kai Janam” (‘Teri Talaash Mein’, 1968), “Kai Sadiyon Se, Kai Janmon Se” (‘Milaap’, 1972), and such songs of love as “Main To Har Mod Par Us Ko Doonga Sadaa” (‘Chetna’, 1970), “Phir Milengi Kahaan, Aisi Tanhaaiyaan”, (‘Bhaavna’, 1972), “Har Janam Mein Hamaara Milan” (‘Kaagaz Ki Naao’, 1975), and “Tumhe Ho Na Ho, Mujhko To, Itna Yakeen Hai” (‘Gharonda’, 1977). Starting his film career with the film ‘Jaggu’ in 1952, this poet of the off beat continues to be active on both the big and small screens.

Wishing a very happy birth anniversary to Naqsh Lyallpuri, and also wishing him many more healthy and poetical years still to come.

We now move to the consonants, having completed the list of basic vowels. So far, the only alphabet missing is the letter ‘ ई’.

This here is a wonderful nazm from the 1973 film ‘Mere Ghareeb Nnawaaz’. A very soft expression of first love, which has been sung so softly by Rafi Sb. I remember this nazm was quite popular in its time and was frequently heard on the radio waves.

The measured deliberateness of singing underscores the mastery of the singer on perfectly realizing the nuances of the emotions involved. Yes, truly vintage Rafi.

This song will definitely remind you of another very popular Rafi solo song. No prizes for guessing; the similarity of rendition of the first line is a dead giveaway. Yes, you will recognize the song immediately. Both songs are equally fast paced. however, after the first line, the similarity ends. The other song has already been identified as a Johnny Walker song, based on information provided in comments by one of our readers. My strong hunch is that even this song should be a Johnny Walker song. His name appears in the cast of actors of this film.

I am glad that I posted this song when I did. As per my search, this is possibly the last song of Rafi Sb that starts with ‘ऊ’, and not yet posted on our blog. Just made it by cat’s whiskers. Otherwise, I would have been expressing regrets, just like for ‘ई’. 🙂

Ah yes, you notice that I skipped the vowel ‘ई’ and jumped straight to the vowel ‘उ’. The reason is that in all the film and non film songs that I could access and check, all songs starting with ‘ई’ have already been posted. With its typical usage profile in the language, there are very few songs that start with words that start with ‘ई’ in Rafi Sb’s list of songs. So I move on to the next vowel in sequence.

Searching through the obscure and the unheard, we continue to encounter such fabulous creations that bring a gasp of pleasant surprise. Today, in the second installment of this new series of songs by Rafi Sb, I bring this exuberant song of ‘chhed chhaad’ from an unreleased film from the 1960s. The film is ‘Jaan Bachi Laakhon Paaye’. We have one song from this film already posted a little over one year ago – “Teri Zulf Mein Chun Ke Champa Ki Kaliyan”, another delightful creation, in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and Sharda.

So far in this series, we have added four new films to the blog. As per the analysis done by Khyati Ben, 104 films were produced in the year 1961. Of these, 12 films were not yet represented here. The four films that I have been able to track down and add here are – ‘Muraad’, ‘Room No. 17’, ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’ and ‘State Express’.

Wishing Usha Khanna on her 74^th birth anniversary, a celebration full of all things good and happy.

For some reason, Usha Khanna never received the recognition and fame that she so rightfully deserves. She is not the first, but definitely is the most successful and talented of a handful of female composers in the Hindi film industry. Born on 7^th October 1941, she composed music for her first film at a very young age of 17 with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ 1959. This was also after more than one year of a sort of apprenticeship and convincing the world that composing was an easy task for her.
