Mukesh and his Co-Singers –14
I have covered Mukesh’s songs composed by Sharda in my previous post.
I have also tried to cover many aspects of her career, but a few more details remain. A lot can be written about her association with Shankar and the various gossips and stories. But then, what is also known is that Sharda never revolted or reacted to these. She continued her life and career with whatever she came across. As such, a thought ran through my mind that it is better to stick to facts and statistics rather than the personal lives of artists.
We all have our likes and dislikes. I am not particularly fond of Sharda’s voice. But, then in many of her songs there is this unconventional, distinctive childish texture in her voice. In many songs that she sang this was a welcome change and did manage to capture the attention of music lovers. In an era where heroines were evolving into more mature roles and free expressions, such a voice suited their antics on the screen.

On the afternoon of August 27, 1976, in Detroit city of America and at Hotel Pontchartrain to be precise, Mukesh had a massive heart attack and passed away on his way to the hospital. Less than a mile away at Ford Auditorium, he was supposed to perform his last concert of his 1976 US tour. But it was not to be.
A copy of his beloved Ramayan and his self-assurance that his son would continue his legacy were with him when he passed away.
On his remembrance day today, we pay tributes to Mukesh who passed away with his boots on.

We have been discussing movies where one song was posted long ago and it took ages before the second song was posted on the blog. The ‘ten-year challenge’ gives us opportunities for posting songs of such movies which have been on the blog and running well 😊, and also movies which took almost twelve years to get all their songs covered on the blog after their debut. (Latest case being the movie ‘Warrant-1975’ which was ‘Yippeeee’ed’ recently. The first song of ‘Warrant-1975’ was posted on the blog in September’2008).

The date today is 7 july 2020. From the HFM point of view, birth anniversaries of Anil Biswas (born 1914) and Saraswati Kumar Deepak (born 1918) falls today. We have already honoured the two artists in two articles earlier today.
Some other important non HFM related things also happened on this day. It was on this day in 1928 that sliced bread was forst sold by Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri, USA. Their product, “Kleen Maid Sliced Bread was advertised as “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped. This gave rise to the popular idiom “greatest thing since sliced bread”. 🙂

And thus he sang in 1949, with no conception that his voice and words are going to resonate around the globe into the 21st century or the next millennia. If he had known how famous and well known one day he was destined to be, I wonder how much more conscious and eager to reach the heights a performer of his class would have been. Or if he could have excelled himself in what way. As it is, he was in a class of his own. The thing about this whole saga called Mohammed Rafi ‘s songs, is that there is/was simply no competition.
