“Baat Ek Raat Ki” (1962) is a movie starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. When one looks at the songs of this movie, one notices that this movie had lots of singers singing lots of solos and duets. This movie had singers like Rafi,Lata, Manna Dey,Hemant Kumar,Asha Bhonsle and Suman Kalyanpuri. And this movie has duets sung by Rafi and Lata, Rafi and Asha Bhonsle, as well as Hemant Kumar and Suman Kalyanpur. In fact, Asha Bhonsle and Rafi sing as many as four duets in this movie.

Mehmood had given R D Burman his first break as an independent music director in “Chhote Nawaab” (1962). Ironically, R D Burman was unable to get any other assignment as an independent music director after that. He continued to work as an assistant to his father. Others may not have cared to look at R D Burman, but Mehmood once again reposed his faith on R D Burman as the music director for his movie called “Bhoot Bangla” (1965). I have mentioned this fact about Hindi movie songs that most of them are about human feelings viz love, sadness, happiness and not about commerce/business. In fact there are very few songs that are about selling some products. I have discussed a few songs where chanajor or similar stuff is being sold. With an average of over 7 songs posted per day, the musical journey from 4101 to 4200 has been covered in 14 days flat. This beats the previous record of 16 days. Congratulations ALL. 😀

Here is an absolute gem of a song that has been lying hidden all these decades.

This song is from “Nayi Kahaani” (1943). I am not only surprised that music lovers have forgotten this song, I am even more surprised at the fact that the print of this movie is still available and that too in a reasonably pristine condition, going by the print quality of this picturisation. When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians was naturally at its peak. People wanted to forge their own identity and one of the battle cries that was frequently heard those days was to give up wearing Western clothings and wear native clothings. Dressing up western style, applying make up etc was regarded as western and was mocked.
