When I had begun this blog, my grand vision was to discuss 2500 songs. I had thought that by that time I would have discussed all the Hindi movie songs that are worth discussing. When I finally reached that magic figure (on 29 may 2010), I found that I had just scratched the surface, as far as discussing the great Hindi movie songs was concerned and that many great songs were not yet discussed.

I was under the impression that I had already discussed this song in the past. It turns out that I have discussed as many as three songs from this movie, but not this one.

Here is a song that was highly popular during its time when I was an impressionable kid in my pre teens. For a change, I knew which movie this song was from. This song was the title song of “Ganwaar” (1970). The voice of Rafi was unmistakable.

By late 1950s, Meena Kumari was moving over from happy bubbly roles to weepy sentimental roles. “Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi” (1960) is one of the first such movies where Meena Kumari was seen in such a role, though her role here is not as melodramatic as it would become in her subsequent movies.

Gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa

I thought I had already discusssed this song from “Subah Ka Taara” (1954). So I was surprised to get a farmaish for this song. On checking, I realised that I had not posted this song, or for that matter any song from this movie.
I clearly recall discussing this song in the past. So now I realise that I had discussed this song in my other blog while discussing Binaca geetmala, C Ramchandra etc.
Here is this wonderful song from “Subah Ka taara” (1954). This is a duet sung by Talat Mehmood and Lata. It is picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Jashree as a train song. What a joyous song it is. This song can be described as the title song as well as theme song of this movie as well.
Noor Lucknowi is the lyricist and C Ramchandra is the music director. What a timeless classic this song is ! Listening to this song certainly makes one’s day.

Lyrics
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
toote dil kaa bandhaa sahaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
saans khushi ki tan mein aayi
armaanon ne li angdaayi
jaag uthin ummeeden saari
jaag uthi taqdeer hamaari
kahin kisi ne door pukaaraa
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
murjhaayi kali kyaa phir se khilegi
murjhaayi kali kyaa phir se khilegi
khoyi huyi kyaa raahat milegi
kahin ye taaraa toot na jaaye
subah kaa saathi chhoot na jaaye
aankhon mein rah jaaye nazaaraa
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayi udaasi raunak chhaayi
raushni ab jeewan mein aayi
hansi khushi kaa chhedo taraanaa
naach uthe man jhoome zamaanaa
samaa suhaanaa pyaaraa pyaaraa
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
This is a category of songs that I heard in my younger days for a few times without being aware of any details and then I forgot all about it. Now, more than four decades later, I became aware of this song thanks to its farmaish. When I listened to this son again, it was like being re united with a song that had got separated from me during my childhood.
