Welcome all to the 5200th offering on this blog. An enchanting journey that continues to grow from strength to strength, has reached another landmark today. It seemed just like yesterday that we hit the 5000 mark (it was on 13th November), and lo, we are already 200 songs even beyond that magic number today. Congratulations to all, and especially to Atul ji, for being the consistent driving force behind this effort. Remembering Rafi Saab on his 87th birth anniversary.
‘Saawan’ (1959) is a film produced under the banner of NC Films, Bombay. The banner ‘NC Films’ belongs to the Behl family. Music director Hansraj Behl and his brother Gulshan Behl started this company, in the name of their father, Sh. NC Behl. Gulshsan Behl is the producer. The film is directed by Ramesh Tiwari. There are 10 songs listed for this film. All songs except one are penned by Prem Dhawan. One of the songs is written by Asad Bhopali. This song is from the pen of Prem Dhawan. The film is a social drama, and the star cast includes Bharat Bhushan, Ameeta, Jeevan, Achla Sachdev, Tiwari, Helen, Leela Misra, Tuntun, Majnoo, Naazi, Jagdish Kanwal, Master Deepak etc.

Remembering Rafi Saab on his 87th birth anniversary
It is thirty one years now that Rafi Saab left this mortal world. As per Hindu scriptures, ‘shabd’ or word / sound is eternal. And thus the voice of Rafi Saab. Probably the most mellifluous, and the most pliable voice that has ever graced the Hindi silver screen and the radio airwaves. The loss at a reasonably young and active age of 55, has been irreplaceable, as the past three decades have shown. Many contenders came and tried to take his place. But in the test of time, Rafi Saab towers above all and his voice, now emanating from electronic storage, still strums the strings of the heart, as they did decades ago.

Hansraj Behl made his composing debut in Hindi films, in the year 1946. As per records, his first film released is ‘Pujaari’ (1946). In the same year, two more films were also released with music composed by him. these are ‘Phulwaari’ and ‘Gvaalan’. Rare films in their own rights, and very little is known about them. This delightful song is from the film ‘Gvaalan’, sung by Zohrabai Ambaalewaali (or Zohrabai Ambaalaa).

“Nai Roshni” (1967) is a litle known movie, despite being a relatively “recent” movie by the standards of this blog.This movie had Ashok Kumar, Raj Kumar, Mala Sinha, Asit Sen, Pahadi Sanyal, Biswajeet etc in it.

Phir teri kahaani yaad aayi

“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is an archtypical Dilip Kumar movie. At least that is how it appeared to me when I became aware of this movie in my younger days. This movie was being shown in an open space in my colony for free. Young kids like me and my friends , after suffering through the movie for almost half the lenth of the movie, could take it no more and decided to call it quits. “What is all this pyar vyaar, rona dhona, why cannot the hero indulge in some maar dhaad instead”, our leader wondered aloud, and the rest of the kids whole heartedly agreed.
