“Pugree” (1948) is a movie that had Amar, Wasti, Kamini Kaushal, Shashikala, Gope, Pratima Devi, Ram Avtaar etc in it. This movie has some delightful songs in it. I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past.

During late 1960s and early 1970s, when I was a young kid, I hated the time period between 7-30 AM to 8 AM, because it was during this time that “Puraani filmon ke geet” programme was played on the air by Radio Ceylon. In this programme, songs from 1930s, 1940s and even 1950s were played. The singers were often names that I had never heard of. And their singing styles were found amusing by kids like me.

“Chandralekha” (1948) was a milestone for Indian movie industry. It was originally a South Indian movie produced by Gemini.After its huge success in South India, the movie was dubbed/remade into Hindi and its success among Hindi movie watchers paved the way for South Indian producers to venture into producing Hindi movies, not just as remake of South Indian movies, but also original Hindi movies.

While looking for songs of “Heer Ranjha” (1970), I discovered that this was not the only movie bearing this title. There have been as many as six movies called “Heer Ranjha” over the decades ! “Heer Ranjha” (1970) -the fifth movie bearing this title is the most well known of them, thanks mainly to its music. Prior to this movie, “Heer Ranjha” (1948) -the fourth movie with this title,was the most well known movie of this name.
