BAHU BETI (1952) seems to be an obscure film which was produced under the banner of Kesar Films and directed by C L Dheer. The main cast included Geeta Bali and Amarnath in the lead roles with Vijaylaxmi, Jaswant, Leela Mishra, Rashid Khan etc in the supporting roles. There are 8 songs in the film written by Kaifi Azmi (7) and Vishwamitra Adil (1) which were set to music by S D Batish. Incidentally, the film’s director C L Dheer was the father of TV and film actor Pankaj Dheer (‘Karna’ of Mahabharat) and the grandfather of film actor Nikitin Dheer who has acted in films like ‘Jodha Akbar’ (2008) and ‘Chennai Express’ (2013).

Since time immemorial, classical and semi-classical ( thumri, dadra, khayal etc,) music have been the privilege mainly of the higher strata of the society. As such, they have not been as popular as the film music as the latter has a wider reach. Then we have the legacy and a rich heritage of regional folk music which remained within the confines of the respective regions. However, with the advent of talkies and playback singing from early 1930s, film songs based on the classical ragas, semi-classical and folk tunes have played a major role in popularising these genres of Indian music especially during the golden era of the film music. In a way, films have become the catalyst for providing equal opportunity to all across India to access music.

I am a bit slow to adopt new things unlike say youngsters. But then it is natural that older people are more resistant to change than youngsters. The reason is that the youngsers begin with a clean slate whereas older people already have lots on their hands and their attempt is to hold on to the considerable body of work and experience that they may have achieved in the past. But then oldtimers to today too were youngsters of yesteryears and even they were then like today’s youngsters. I recall that I was a computer enthusiastic in 1990s the way today’s youngsters are enthusiastic about mobile phones. I in fact would open up the minitower of my desktop computer and perform uprades on my computers myself. That is how I added sound card, additional RAM, higher capacity hard drive etc myself. When it came to using the computer, I would often indulge in activities like formatting the hard disk, partitionaing hard disk, reinstalling the operating system and other applications etc myself.
