As my age advances, I have started realising that I am recalling memories of my childhood and younger days much better than before. The flip side is that I tend to get forgetful or absent-minded in respect of my immediate past events. While the old days’ remembrance can be nostalgic and some time makes me emotional, the positive side is that I have started remembering some of the old Hindi films songs which I had completely forgotten for many years. But here is a catch which places me in a piquant situation. In some cases, I just remember the tune of a song and not the starting words or in an other way round, I remember the starting words but struggle to get to the tune of the song. Obviously, I have no inkling about the names of the films concerning these songs.

Raat ki mehfil sooni sooni

After reading my own article on a song from NOOR JEHAN (1967) ‘ sharaabi sharaabi ye saawan ka mausam’ on this blog, I felt guilty for bypassing, in my view, the most beautiful song of this film ‘ raat ki mehfil sooni sooni’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. In fact the very purpose of ascertaining whether this song was in my VCD or not was a precursor to write an article on this song. But somehow I was carried away by the availability of the video clip of the Suman Kalyanpur song. So I sat down for deciphering the lyrics of ‘raat ki mehfil sooni sooni’ which was not a difficult task due to the clear audio and impeccable diction of Lata Mangeshkar.

I am not a keen watcher of period movies but do buy VCDs/DVDs of such movies mainly for watching the fabulous songs. Recently, I watched NOOR JEHAN (1967) with a view to ascertaining whether the VCD contained the only Lata Mangeshkar song ‘ raat ki mehfil sooni sooni’ in it. In this process, I saw the entire movie. As I expected, the song was excluded from the VCD. In fact, it is said that this song was not included in the original print of the film. Despite some mindless cuts in the VCD version affecting the continuity of the screen play and the bad quality of video, I did not feel a total let down by the film. The story which I knew from the history books was interesting one from the point of view of cinematic presentation. The film was shot on lavish sets and outdoor locations in keeping with the period movie theme.
