It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. This is a Chinese saying which teaches us that even the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point; something which begins with one first step.

We in the blog have been following this saying without realising it. If one song post is considered one step, then we took our first step on 19 July 2008. Today (8 February 2024) is the 5683rd day for the blog. With this post we take our 18200th step. Or to be more precise, this post is the 18200th post for the blog. The figure of 18200 is quite a mind boggling figure, but we were able to achieve it without putting us under any pressure. We just kept covering a few songs every day, kept celebrating important milestones, kept enjoying the journey, and now, here we are.

Today (26 January 2024) is Republic Day of India.

India became a republic on 26 January 1950. That was easily a red letter day in the history of Modern India. It was on this day that India decided to be a country that would be a democracy where each citizen, irrespective of his caste, creed, religion, gender, economic status etc would enjoy equality without discrimination. The country would be governed according to the acts of Indian constitution that was adopted on this date.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Baghdad Ki Raaten’ (1962).

The film is labelled as ‘kalpanik‘, (काल्पनिक) meaning based on an imaginary story. I would have loved to meet the writer of this story, who had such fantastic imagination, but the film mentioned that the story was by the ‘Story Department ‘ of the banner/studio. That explains ! It is not possible to imagine such stories by one single person. The Arabian Night stories were supposed to be told by Scheherazade-wife of the King Shehriar of Persia- to her husband at the rate of one story a night for continuously 1001 nights, to avoid her death. I am sure even she would gladly embrace death after hearing the ‘Arabian Stories’ made by the imaginative story departments of Indian films ! In this one department, we easily defeat the rest of the world’s filmmakers !!

Shakespeare’s plays have been one of the important sources for adapting them in Hindi films since the beginning of the Indian film industry in 1913. However, since very few films produced and released during the silent film era survived, it is difficult to say how many silent films were based on Shakespeare’s plays. A research paper on Shakespeare on Screen by Dr. Joseph Koyippally has identified 8 silent films based on Shakespeare’s plays that were released between 1923-30.

Today, January 13, 2024, is 94th birth anniversary of music director, Sardar Malik. In his childhood, he had wished to be a singer, but the fate turned him toward music direction. He did not have a prolific career. He never got opportunity to work with top film banners in spite of talents which was reflected in most of the songs he composed. Recently, I had gone through his interview on Vividh Bharati which was probably conducted after his ‘retirement’ from the film world. From his talk, I could visualize him to be a man of principles, a man of least resistance and a man of self-respect which will not allow him to indulge in networking. Lastly, he was a sensitive person who refrained from hurting anyone even if he had suffered from wrongdoings.

Today’s song is a duet from the film ‘Rocket Girl’ (1962).

Man has always been curious about other planets and the other worlds. His attempts to know more about them have been known since the Vedic Times, i.e. about 5000 years ago. Our religious books describe the various celestial bodies and there are many stories told about them. However, the modern human quest, in reality, started first when during the II World War, Germany developed a rocket to carry missiles over a long distance. The Germans called it the V2 rocket. From this was developed the first ever rocket which went into space for a short period in 1942.

The name Neeraj means one that is born of water. The singular reference is towards the lotus flower. In Hindi, ‘नीरज’ is a synonym for the lotus flower.  And so is Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ – a lotus amongst the poets and songwriters whose verses have graced the screens of Hindi Cinema.
