In the Hindu mythology, Gandharvas are stated to be the male heavenly spirit and in the context of music, the term is used for a highly skilled vocalist. Maharashtra had the privilege of having four ‘Gandharvas’. First, Sawai Gandharva (real name : Rambahu Kundgolkar – 19/01/1886 – 12/09/1952). He was a popular Hindustani classical vocalist and Marathi stage actor-singer. He was the first disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana gharana. One of the disciples of Sawai Gandharva was Pandit Bhimsen Joshi who later started the annual Sawai Gandharva Festival at Pune in the memory of his guru.

When I was a school kid then I found most, if not all subjects as boring. Even out of all these boring subjects, history took the cake. It was extremely difficult to remember the names of the kings, their eras, and what they did during their reign. And in case these kings happened to be born before the era of Christ then remembering their dates of birth and death was even more confusing. 🙂 Emperor Ashok, for instance was born in 304 BC and died in 232 BC. What kind of kings they were who died before they were born, was the doubt in the minds of many students of tender years.

“Kab Kyun Aur Kahaan” (1970) was produced and directed by Arjun Hingorani. It was his first movie as a producer. The movie had Dharmendra, Babita, Pran, Helen, Asit Sen, Mohan Choti, Shetty, Pran, Dhumal, Ashoo etc in it. This movie must have done good business. So much so that he made it a point to have three words titles, with each word beginning with K. Take that, Ekta Kapoor ! :).

I heard these lines in the inimitable voice of Mohammed Rafi yesterday on Radio Rafi. I was looking for details regarding this song in the Database at mohdrafi.com, so not paying much attention to the radio playing. As the words of the poem registered, it caught my attention. I managed to catch the last line in the audio clip “pujaari husn ka hoon main”.

January 28th is the birth day of playback singer Suman Kalyanpur. She is a living example of how the career of a talented singer can be marred by a close resemblance of the voice of the numero uno singer in the field, in her case Lata Mangeshkar. Naturally, film industry preferred the reigning queen rather than giving enough opportunity to Suman Kalyanpur to prove her worth. She was mostly used as a substitute for Lata Mangeshkar when the latter was not available for recording the songs. Alternatively, she would get the singing assignments in low budget films. In the circumstances, I thought that she would have utilised her spare time in recording many NFSs. I find that even in respect of NFSs, Suman Kalyanpur is lagging in numbers in comparison to other top playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh etc. Was she really interested in pursuing playback singing career ? She is known to be a very private and low profile person. Only those who were close to her could get to know her mind. It took Ameen Sayani more than 40 years to persuade her to give an interview for a radio programme. Subsequently, she has given a couple of interviews through which we have come across some more information about her singing career.
