Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
I came to know about actress Chhaaya Devi for the first time some time in 2011 when I found her name mentioned in Kidar Sharma’s autobiography, ‘The One And Lonely Kidar Sharma’ (2002) in the context of the shooting of the film ‘Vidyapati’ (1937). At that time, I thought her to be one of many female actors connected with New Theatres who had short acting career. For me, the only female actor of that time who mattered in Kolkata film industry was actor-singer Kanan Devi. What a wrong impression I had about Chhaya Devi when I came to know later that she had a long filmy career of over 5 decades – both in Bangla and Hindi films.

Amitabh Bachhchan, the star of the Millennium, was born in the than Allahabad (which is the English name of city named Ilahbad in Urdu) on 11.10.1942. His given name is Inquilab Srivastava, as per Wikipedia. This is a surprise for me and surely for many people, as a never heard fact. Also has the distinction of acting as the hero in the film ‘Inquilab’ not named after him :-). His father did name him after the slogan of freedom movement “Inquilab Zindabad”. I have never heard of anyone named ‘inquilab’, but have a friend named ‘Kranti’ which is the same thing with change in language only.

There are some very special memories related to this song. Memories of certain flights of fancy, associated with the expressions and emotions contained here in.
Greetings to Usha Khanna ji, on her 78th birthday today (7th October). It is sixty years now that she made her debut as a music director, way back in 1959 – ‘Dil Deke Dekho’, a film by Filmalya’s Sashadher Mukherjee. She recounts with a glee now, but then she was very nervous. Of course, just seventeen, recently out of school, and so miraculously given a break for a big name Shammi Kapoor starrer film. The first song recorded was “Megha Re Boley. . .”. She walked into the recording studio with Sonik, who was the arranger for that film. She recalls that some musicians actually whistled at her as she made her way toward the group. And then Sonik told them that she is the music director. Quite a silence of disbelief followed.

Just like so many more human endeavors, wherein the concepts and philosophical models of ‘-isms’ are all so correct and convincing, and their practical implications and implementations are so faulty and distorted that the discussions about the defects and flaws, also sounds very convincing in the hindsight.
