‘Daasi’ (1981) was produced by Subhash Verma and was directed by Raj Khosla. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, Vikram, Paintal, Radhika Bartake, Sidharth Kak, Dhumal, Leela Mishra, Sundar, Narbada Shankar, Anita Advani etc.
The film was planned in 1976 based on a Hindi novel, ‘Mangala’ (1958) written by Anant Gopal Shevde. The main plank of the story in the novel is that Mangala goes through a deceitful arranged marriage with a blind singer, Pandit Sadananda. As a revenge, she rebels against the marriage by seducing her husband’s best friend and finally eloping with him. In the end, Mangala returns to her husband, Pandit Sadananda and becomes a vocalist under his tutelage. However, during the film’s planning stage, the producer and distributors felt that the plot was too bold and the audience may not accept it. Raj Khosla majorly tweaked the story of the novel for the film by making the husband’s friend (Rakesh Roshan) as her ex-lover and making him a grey character. ‘Rachna’ (1983) was produced by Girdhar Bhatia and Pravin Paul and was directed by Satish who also wrote story and screenplay. The cast included Anil Kapoor and Beena in lead roles supported by Deepak Shankar (debutant), Pravin Paul, Nazir Hussain, Shivraj, Birbal, Lalita Kumari, Indira Bansal, Tabassum, Gufi Paintal, Savita Bajaj with the friendly appearances of Iftekhar, Chandrashekhar, Shammi, Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee and Jagdeep. It was Anil Kapoor’s first released film in a lead role though he had signed first for a lead role in ‘Kahan Kahan Se Guzar Gaya’ (1986) which had a delayed release. This was the only lead role Beena had performed in her entire Hindi film career. Incidentally, in ‘Lovers’ (1983) which was released in the same year, Beena had played the role of the mother to Kumar Gaurav.

‘Dil Aakhir Dil Hai’ (1982) was produced by M S Gulati and was directed by Esmayeel Shroff. The cast included Rakhee, Nasiruddin Shah, Parveen Babi, Jalal Agha, Rehman, A K Hangal, Deena Pathak, Dinesh Hingoo, Ramesh Tiwari, Murad, Leela Mishra etc.
In an interview with The Times of India, which was published on October 27, 2022, Nasiruddin Shah has revealed that he was cast in the film only because Rishi Kapoor had backed out from the film. Film’s director, Esmayeel Shroff propped him up by saying that he can do any type of roles. But as the film progressed, he and the director realised that he was a misfit in the film. Probably, this was one of the reasons that film failed at the box office.

Today 18th August, 2025 is the ninety-seconth birthday of Poet, Lyricist, Writer, Director and Producer Gulzar Saab. On this occasion we are celebrating his birthday here on this blog by posting songs penned by him.
In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Naram Garam-1981’. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for Film Group, Bombay. This movie was produced by Subhash Gupta & Uday Narayan Singh. The cast of this movie has Amol Palekar, Swaroop Sampat, Utpal Dutt, A.K. Hangal, Kiran Wairale, Padma Chavan, Suresh Chatwal, Anand, T.P. Jain, Sunder, Javed Khan, Bishen Khanna, Vijay Ghosh, Saral Mukherjee, Adarsh Tandon, Mukund Dada, and Chandramohan Khanna, Devi Chand, Shatrughan Sinha and others. Om Prakash, Dina Pathak, Meena Roy, and Neelu Phule had a special appearance in this movie.

‘Thikaana’ (1987) was produced by Paul Arora, Raj Grover and V B Soni and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The cast included Smita Patil, Anil Kapoor, Amrita Singh, Suresh Oberoi, Rohini Hattangadi, Avtar Gill, Madan Jain, Satish Kaushik, Aravind Joshi, Suhas Bhalekar, Suresh Bhagwat, Rita Rani Kaul with a special appearance of Anupam Kher. Mahesh Bhatt started shooting the film immediately after the release of his film, ‘Arth’ (1982). However, the completion of the film was delayed probably because there was disputes between the producers which got sorted out through Prakash Mehra who acted as an arbitrator. The film was released on October 18, 1987.

YouTube is an American social media and online video sharing platform owned by Google. It is an amazing tool that helps us in our blogging expedition. Based on our previous search history, it keeps suggesting links to videos.
That means, for followers of ATULSONGADAY, YouTube will keep suggesting videos of Hindi Fillum Sangeet. The suggestions may also be based on any particular actor, movie or artist, specially if we have looked up for songs of the concerned artist.
So, as I was browsing through YouTube yesterday, I came across a song which had Sunny Deol trying to shake a leg in tandem with Sridevi for a song that was playbacked (I am sure there is no such word in the English dictionary) by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle. It had Meenakshi Seshadri & Anil Kapoor, standing among the people who were watching the proceedings. On looking up for details, on our blog of course, I found that it has found its place on the blog in 2022 with this post by Avinashji.
