Today’s song is from an old film-Billi-1938.

Sometimes, when I have some free time, I just go through the “Talkie Films’ Index”, a book by Hamraz ji and look for odd or comic film titles. I can assure you that one can spend few hours in this process. One gets surprised to see the creativity of the filmmakers in giving titles to their films. In general, the title is expected to reflect the type of the film concerned e.g. ‘Ghar ek Mandir’ clearly indicates that it must be a family drama film or ” Hum sab chor hain” can indicate an entertaining hilarious movie. However, many times the title does not have any far-fetched connection with the story, like the films ” Silky-1984″, ” Rihilla-2007″ or ” Oh, my God-2008″ and 2012″. What would you understand about these films ? Can you guess its type or even the Genre ?

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # # Taraana-1979#

Today I am presenting a song, which for me falls under the category of ‘nostalgic songs’ and ‘songs that brings back memories’. It is also among the ‘most awaited songs’ which I wish to see here on the blog.

This song is from the movie ‘Taraana-1979’. It was directed by Deepak Bahri for ‘Chanda Pictures’. It was presented by Rajshri Productions and produced by Tarachand Barjatya.

Today’s song is a duet from an 87 year old film, Khan Bahadur-1937.

The year 1937 was a year of Revolution for the newly started Talkie Films. Initially the films were mainly based on Folk tales, Parsi dramas and Mythological stories. 1937 was a year in which the Film industry was trying to drop its old skin and don a New Avtar. From this year, a variety of subjects were used to make films. If we briefly look at some path breaking, landmark films using Novel themes, we will understand how the film industry was attempting to change itself.

Today’s song is from a special film from the early era of the Hindi Talkie films – Mahageet-1937.

In 1645, German Mathematician Ethonius Kircher, during his usual work, accidentally found that unmoving pictures, if seen quickly in a chronicled manner could give the feel of movement. He made a box for this and named it ” Kircher Magic Lamp” aka Kitoscope. This is considered as the birth of the idea of the films. Over a period of 250 years, Edison made his first prototype Kinetoscope in 1891. Its improved version was exhibited on 14-4-1894. However, the French Lumier Brothers made a Cinematograph and it was commercially presented on 28-12-1895. By a strange coincidence, it was done in an ” Indian Salon” in the Grand Cafe Hotel in Paris.

Today’s song is from the film Jwala-1938.

It was a regular Costume film made by Master Vinayak’s Huns Pictures. The film had a cast of Ratnaprabha, Chandra Mohan, Ashalata, Mandhare, Vinayak, Rajni and others. Music Director was Debutante Dhamman Khan, assisted by the veteran Dada Chandekar. Dhamman Khan was one of those giants of classical music who had developed an urge (call it itch) to try their hand at composing film music,do a film or two and return to their own comfort zone again.
Some such other examples are Bhurji khan(Kurukshetra-33), Ameer saab(Nirdosh abla-35), Nawab Khan(Mirza sahiban-35) Wamanrao Sadolikar(Naganand-35…this is C.Ramchandra’s First film as a Hero. The film ran for just ONE day !),Abdul Kareem Khan (Maut ka Toofan-35 and Voh kaun-35), Master Giyasuddin (Typist girl-35) etc etc.

Today’s song is from an old film, Duniya Kya Hai-1938.

Hindi film Industry is not only a ” Maya Nagari”, but also a “Jadoo Nagari”. You will find that unimaginable contrasts keep on happening here. You will find that a very beautiful, talented and famous actress like Meena Shorey (La Ra Rappa fame) was an absolute uneducated and illiterate person. She could neither read nor even sign herself. Due to this, she blindly put her thumb on the service contract made by Sohrab Modi and was on the verge of spoiling her career. It was her luck that Mehtab Helped her and on the payment of only Rs. 30,000 (instead of 60000, asked by Sohrab Modi) she got the restrictive and unjust contract cancelled. A similar case was of the singer Sitara Kanpuri, who did the same mistake with W.Z.Ahmed of Shalimar Pictures. It was only when Ahmed migrated to Pakistan in 1947, she got her freedom to sing anywhere.

Today’s song is from the 86 year old film Bhabhi-1938.

Writing with fervour and emotions on old films is like being a doctor with a very odd and unknown speciality, e.g. Medical geneticist, which is a very rare type of speciality. In the entire USA there are less than a thousand such specialists. Another odd speciality is Aviation Medicine. In the USA, there are hardly 500 such specialists. For a common man these specialities are a waste of time and these are not big income earners. Nowadays, everything is measured in terms of earning money. Liking and choice have no value. I am sure, in India specialists of the above two categories may not have marriageable values even !

Today, the 3rd of July is the 72nd birthday of Amit Kumar Ganguly, popularly known as Amit Kumar. Amit Kumar is the son of Kishore Kumar and Ruma Ganguly. Like his father, Amit started singing from an early age and he used to sing at Durga Pooja festivals in Calcutta. At one such function arranged by Bengali actor “Mahanayak” Uttam Kumar, the audience continued requesting encores. While his mother complained that he was singing “filmy” songs, his father decided to bring him to Bombay.
