“Swaami”(1977) is a movie that was produced by Hema Malini’s mother (Jaya Chakravarty) and this movie had Girish Karnad and Shabana Azmi in lead roles. Though none of the people involved were of Bengal background, but this movie was based on the backdrop of Bengal.

Action movies, which were regarded as B and C grade stuff till 1960s had gone on to become A grade movies, and movies with non violent stories were pushed out of centrestage. But there were takers for these movies, which were then known as social movies of family movies.

There were five Mangeshkar siblings- four sisters and one brothers, viz, Meena, Lata, Asha (Bhonsle), Usha, and their brother Hridaynath. Out of the five, Lata and Asha were the two who have sung thousands of songs and they have gone on to become household names. Other three siblings have also sang songs in movies, but they are very few.

“Dulhan wah jo piya man bhaaye” (1977) was a runaway hit of the year. In fact, this was a bigger hit than “Sholay” in the city where I was growing up.

“Dulhan wahi jo piya man bhaaye” was not a mainstream movie. It was a movie made by Rajshree productions and as was their wont, there were no big names in this movie.
