Today (19 august) is Utpal Dutt’s death anniversary. Utpal Dutt was typically known to play the role of an idiosyncratic oldie. During early 1980s, he got somewhat typed cast as a lecherous old man eyeing women greedily. He played such roles in movies like “Naram Garam” (1981) and “Shaukeen” (1982). In “Shaukeen”, he had company of like minded oldtimers viz Ashok Kumar and A K Hangal, but he was on his own in “Naram Garam” (1981).

“Laawaris” (1981) was Produced and directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan, Suresh Oberoi, Bindu, Raakhee Gulzar, Om Prakash, Ranjeet, Ram Sethi etc in it. The movie was criticised quite badly by the movie reviewer of the magazine that I used to read those days. The critic wrote that the best scene in the movie was one that had the words “The End” in it.

Just saw the response from Peevesie’s Mom for the song Ital ke ghal mein teetal) from “Bahuraani” (1963) . And I remembered, the film Jyoti (1981) is almost a frame to frame remake of the film Bahurani (1963), with Jeetendra playing the role played by Guru Dutt, Hema Malini that of Mala Sinha, Vijendra Ghatge that of Feroze Khan, Shashikala that of Lalita Pawar, Ashok Kumar that of Nazir Hussain, and Deven Verma that of Mukri.

About six weeks ago, the request for this song appeared on the Reader’s Farmaishes page. The request has been put in by Dr. Mona Shah. And the song itself I believe does not need any introductions. An iconic song that hit the radiowaves in 1981, was a rage with teenagers and young people of that era and beyond. The film Kalyug (1981) has just this one song, and this song has become a cult icon all by itself. But there is also a tribulation that is attached with this song. It is rare.
