Muzaffar Ali is one of the few Hindi filmmakers who spearheaded what was known as parallel cinemas during 70s and 80s. He came into the scene of parallel cinemas when some of the films under this tag such as Mrinal Sen’s ‘Bhuvan Shome’ (1969), Mani Kaul’s ‘Uski Roti’ (1969), Kumar Sahani’s ‘Maya Darpan’ (1972), M S Sathyu’s ‘Garam Hawa’ (1973), Shyam Bengal’s ‘Ankur’ (1974) etc were critically acclaimed. Being low budget films, some of these films fared well at the box office.

It is almost a month since the cloud burst over our beloved Himalayas. I have been watching the news intently ever since, specially the coverage on how the temple at Kedarnath is now. And I was in a flash back mode again.

I am told by my daughter (don’t know how she keeps track of all this in between her tight schedule of finishing her projects etc) that today (15 april 2013) is Hasrat Jaipuri’s birthday. I am sure every one knows a lot about Hasrat Saab’s history, where he was born (Jaipur), his birth name (Iqbal Hussain). How he fell in love with a Hindu girl in his youth – the song “Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padhkar” was written for her (so says Wikipedia) which was later used in “Sangam” by Raj Kapoor.

I have thought up an idea of doing a series on ‘desert songs’. Unfortunately most of the famous desert songs are already posted, and I am left with a residue of songs from the 80’s only. I have myself written the post of the songs of ‘Laila Majnoon’ (1976) most of which are in the desert. I request readers to help me in this regard and provide the name of such songs picturized in the desert from 50’s and 60’s .

It seems like “Saveray Wali Gaadi”(1986) makes a debut on this blog with this song. This reflects the fact that the film is hardly remembered now. The reason behind that is that the movie was not highly successful. Thus also sank the beautiful soundtrack of the movie. The songs are not vintage Pancham-stuff but they are very hummable and much better than what his stable would churn out in the later part of the 80s.
