Genius of Jaidev – 52

Recently, on my request a collector friend of mine sent me four Asha’s song from 1971 film ‘Ek Thi Reeta’. Out of eleven songs from that film five are already covered in this musical blog. One by one, I will try to submit (Hari Ichchha permitting) these four Asha’s songs for posting starting from today. After that we will be short of two songs, which I still do not have.

OONCHI HAVELI (1955) was produced under the banner of Sharad Productions and it was directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The star cast included Karan Diwan, Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, B M Vyas, Yashodara Katju, Bhagwan, Janakidas, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant, Niranjan Sharma etc. The film appears to be an obscure one as no other details are available. From the title of the film as well as a few still photographs of the scenes from the film, the story looks to be about the conflict between a royal family and a commoner.

INDRAASAN (Ekaadashi Mahima) (1952) appears to an obscure movie. In a few places on the internet, the film is spelled as ‘Indrasen’. I went by how the film was spelled on the publicity photographs of some scenes from the film. The film had some well-known actors of the 30s and 40s consisting of Prem Adib, Paro Devi, Ishwarlal, Durga Khote, Nand Kishore, Ranjana etc. The film was produced under the banner of Greenland Pictures, Bombay and was directed by Raja Nene.

Sometimes you wonder why a song becomes a huge hit. And at other times, you wonder why a song doesn’t.

Today, as I write this post, I am left to ponder on why this song did not become as huge a hit as, in my opinion, it deserved to. The only explanation I can come up with is that the film tanked badly at the box office. And as we know, many a song has suffered purely because the film itself didn’t do well.

This blog by now has become an online collaboration of likeminded music lovers. And these music lovers are collaborating on quite a few “projects” that may be informal but quite important and significant nevertheless.

Yesterday I happened to watch Anubhav (1971). I had last seen this film when I was a young boy. I must admit I wasn’t particularly impressed by it at that time. In those days, I was into “fun” movies which either had action (like Mera Gaon Mera Desh) or a typical storyline with catchy music (like Kati Patang). Anubhav had neither. The music was beautiful but not the type a 10-year old would find fun.
