Few people today remember this movie called “Ahsaas” (1979). This movie was a quicky movie produced by G P Sippy in the interim period between his two big movies viz. “Sholay” (1975) and “Shaan”(1980). “Ahsaas” (1979) was produced with newcomers with names that no one had heard of. Who were the lead pair in this movie ? Frankly no one seems to recall including me. It was one of those few movies that I had watched first day first show ! And what a disaster of a movie it was. Now others who are into watching first day first show (FDFS), like for instance Santosh Ojha, watch blockbusters like “Trishul”. On the other hand, it is my misfortune to watch dud movies like “Ahsaas” (1979) and “Shalimaar” (1978) in FDFS. Bahut naainsaafi hai.

Experienced music lovers can often identify the music director by listening to the music of a song. Most music directors have their “signature” tunes that differentiate them from others. So most of the time one can identify a tune as being a tune of Naushad, O P Nayyar, Madan Mohan, S D Burman, Roshan, Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal etc.

When Raja pointed it out to me that today (10 may) was Kaifi Azmi’s death anniversary, I began to look for a few songs to discuss. It may sound easy but searching for a Kaifi Azmi song (or for that matter any other artist’s songs) is not a simple affair if that artist is well represented in the blog. More than one hundred of Kaifi Azmi’s songs have already been discussed in the blog. In other words, most well known Kaifi Azmi songs are already there, and only the lesser known songs remain to be discussed. I have already discussed one such lesser known song of Kaifi Azmi. And here is another song which is also quite an obscure song.

Just saw the response from Peevesie’s Mom for the song Ital ke ghal mein teetal) from “Bahuraani” (1963) . And I remembered, the film Jyoti (1981) is almost a frame to frame remake of the film Bahurani (1963), with Jeetendra playing the role played by Guru Dutt, Hema Malini that of Mala Sinha, Vijendra Ghatge that of Feroze Khan, Shashikala that of Lalita Pawar, Ashok Kumar that of Nazir Hussain, and Deven Verma that of Mukri.

The news came in yesterday that the renowned Ghazal Singer Jagjit Singh was no more. And I was surprised to know that he was 70 years of age when he died. And then I realised that I had first heard his ghazals in 1980s, which happens to be three decades ago. So he was indeed that old.

When one thinks of Helen, one thinks of a cabarat song(typically sung by Asha Bhonsle) where Helen, suitably under dressed by Indian standards, performs her dance and then bows out, playing no further part in the movie. There are many Helen fans though who would like to see her in meatier roles in these movies.

The first Hindi movie made by an NRI (non resident India) was “Shalimar” (1978) by Krishna Shah which was made with great publicity and fanfare and it was thought that the movie was going to be another “Sholay”, if not bigger. When finally the movie was released, it turned out that the movie was huge let down. The movie failed to last for more than one week in the movie halls.

When Bappi Lahiri began his career as a music director in mid 1970s, I thought that he was a music director in the sameleague as R D Burman. Considering that I, as well as the rest of India was totally in love with R D Burman’s music, that was high praise indeed.
