By mid 1980s, the golden era of Hindi movie songs was virtually over. By this time,Disco songs, which were quite superficial in their lyrics and lacked any depth had begun to rule the roost.

Most of the songs that I post in this blog are from 1970s and earlier. After 1980s, I more or less lost track of Bollywood movies and its music. And that more or less coincided with deterioration in the quality of Bollywood songs as well.

This song was a popular song during its time. When I listened to it, I thought that R D Burman was the music director. It was only much later that I realised that the music director was not R D Burman , but a newcomer called Bappi Lahiri. Yes, Bappi Lahiri was creating great impression in the minds of music lovers. He had created some nice music in “Zakhmee” (1975), his debut music and then in “Chalte Chalte” (1976).

I like to listen to old songs as is obvious from the songs posted here. But what about the present generation ? They obviously listen to the contemporary music. But it is for people like us to make them aware of the musical treasures of the old movies.

I had listened to this fine song in 1970s, but I was not aware about its details. Now I know its details and I am pleasantly surprised to know that this song is from “Zakhmee” (1975).

Maana ho tum behad haseen

“Toote Khilaune” (1978) was a flop movie and rightly so. Who in his right minds would like to go and buy tickets to watch nobodies like Shekhar Kapoor and Shabana Azmi in lead roles ? Neither I nor anybody else, of course.

Bappi Lahiri is today remembered as the person who triggered degradation of Bollywood music with his “disco” music. But that is not how he began his career. Bappi Lahiri began his career by composing some outstanding music in his initial movies, viz “Zakhmee” (1975), “Chalte Chalte” (1976) etc.

Phoolon ki tarah wo hansti thi

People of my generation were aware of a Hindi movie called “College Girl” (1978) which had a hit Kishore Kumar song, viz. Pyaar maanga hai tumhi se na inkaar karo. Old generation music lovers though were more aware of another movie of the same name that was released in 1960. This movie, viz. “College Girl” (1960) had several nice songs sung by Rafi in it.

Many of the songs in this blog are “serious” songs- songs that are timeless classics, as I like to call them.
But one need not listen to timeless classics all the time. There are occasions when one would like to let his/her hair down and listen to light hearted songs that brings a smile to one’s face.
