Nagin was one of the earliest and biggest musical blockbusters in Bollywood movies. And this movie coincided with the beginning of Binaca geetmala countdown show. The nagin been music had the entire nation swaying like the nagin in the movie.

“Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a one as this walked on the earth in flesh and blood.”
–Einstein

The above quotation by Einstein was said as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, arguably the most influential man of the 20th century. He helped change the fate of millions of people around the globe. When one looks at the major movements of the 20th century- viz anticolonialism, anti apartheid, non violence, and movement against untouchability ( the last one a uniquely Indian social evil)- Gandhi was the motive force/ originator behind all these major movements. And it goes without saying that these movements helped change the destiny of millions of people and scores of nations around the globe.

During 1960-70s, I only wanted to listen to new songs. But with Vividh Bharati, you stood no chance, and Radio Ceylon broadcasted new songs at night only on wednesday in Binaca geetmala. So most often than not, it is songs like this Lata song that I got to hear at night. These days, I would get mesmerised if I listened to this song, but those days, such songs would put me to sleep out of boredom.

Another Lata gem from 1960s. This song from Anupama (1966) was picturised on Surekha ( I thank Raja for this information). The Bollywood actresses those days tended to look like Vyjyantimala, Meena Kumari or Asha Parekh. Surekha looks so much like Asha Parekh in this song. May be that is because of similar appearance, hair style etc.

“Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” was a musical blockbuster of its time. This movie had many songs that broke new ground in the history of Bollywood filmy music.

One of the memorable songs from this movie was this duet sung by Lata and Hemant Kumar. And just notice the lyrics. Hasrat Jaipuri, considered a shayar, has written this song where you cannot find any trace of urdu shayari. The words are written in simple semi rural dialect of Hindi spoken in UP.

I have said it a few times and I need to say it again that Lata was at her peak in 1960s as a singer. The number of memorable songs that she churned out during this decade are many. Here is a memorable song from a suspense movie called Kohra.

Lata Mangeshkar was at her zenith in 1960s in my opinion. And she was helped in that by the fact that she was the preferred choice of the best music directors of that time, who also happened to be the all time greatest music directors of Bollywood.

The same could be said about the lyricists. Genuine poets and shayars of the highest class used to write lyrics for the bollywood songs. And the heady mixture of quality singing, lyrics and music was for all to see and listen to.

“Kabuliwala”, a movie based on Rabindranath Tagore’s moving story of the same name, was significant in many respects. The fact that Bollywood adopted stories of great writers was praiseworthy. The other fact that the story faithfully followed the story was also nice.

In fact, it was a movie that perhaps did the most to popularise this story.
