When one watches a movie which is particularly powerful and deals with human suffering, I for one cannot bear to watch it. Forget watching such movies, I find myself unable to watch the relevant songs from such movies as well.

“Lala Rukh”(1958) is a movie that had Shyama, Talat Mehmood, Vikram Kapoor, Radhika, Lotan, Jagdish Kamal, Tuntun, Ranibala etc in it. Yes, those were the day when Talat Mehmood, like Mukesh, was trying to become an actor-singer. Both of them suffered financially as well as in their singing careers, before they finally reconciled themselves to opt for just singing careers.

While looking for songs of “Heer Ranjha” (1970), I discovered that this was not the only movie bearing this title. There have been as many as six movies called “Heer Ranjha” over the decades ! “Heer Ranjha” (1970) -the fifth movie bearing this title is the most well known of them, thanks mainly to its music. Prior to this movie, “Heer Ranjha” (1948) -the fourth movie with this title,was the most well known movie of this name.

Then there are lullabies in Hindi movies that have become integral part of the growing up process of generations of kids in India. Loris, or lullabies, have always had a special place in Indian life, and many of these are sung by mothers and grandmothers as they rock the baby to sleep in the old fashioned cradle formed by hanging a long piece of cloth from a hook in the ceiling or in a regular cradle. Some loris have also been sung by men, generally widowers, and these tend to be melancholy ones, but there are some exceptions. In Carnatic music, the raga Neelambari is the one used to induce sleep and most lullabies in the South are sung in this raga.
