Jab dard nahin thhaa seene mein

I have often opined that people who can be the most playful when happy can also be the most mournful when sad. Kishore Kumar is quite an interesting study in contrast that way. He is mainly known for his happy go lucky genre of songs and acting, but when it came to producing movies, most of his movies, except “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958) were all serious movies. Likewise, when one makes a list of the most memorable songs sung by Kishore Kumar, lots and lots of serious/sad songs are bound to figure in that list. With a film title as ‘Haaye Mera Dil’ and with Kishore Kumar and IS Johar in the star cast, one can be assured that the film is going to be a comedy about romantic interests of the heart. And assuredly, the film is a successful comedy, and as in all such films, one has to overlook the glitches in the storyline, not ask to be convinced about plot sequencing, and just relax and enjoy the fun. Haaye Mera Dil (1968) is production under the banner of Manohar Films, Bombay, directed by apparently a duo of directors Ved-Madan (that is how the name appears in the credits). The music is by Usha Khanna, and the lyrics are shared amongst Anand Bakshi, SH Behari and PL Santoshi. The star line up includes Kishore Kumar, Kumkum, IS Johar, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Majnu, Raj Mehra, Lakshmi Chhaayaa.

“Baaton Baaton Mein” (1979) is a movie that was not about superhuman characters, but about average day to day characters like you and me. And the depiction of their hopes, aspirations, joys, sorrows and other feelings of the characters were so natural and one could empathise with them. And when these feelings are expressed in the form of songs which are written with heart, composed with sensitivity and sung with feeling, that such songs are bound to be remembered and recalled.
