Hullo to all Atulwaale

Majrooh Sultanpuri was an Urdu poet and also a lyricist or song writer for Bollywood movies. He was born in 1919 in Sultanpur Uttar Pradesh as Asrar ul Hassan Khan to a father who was a police officer. His father, though, a police officer, was not too keen on his son receiving English education and Majrooh was therefore sent for traditional ‘Madrasa education’ which led to his obtaining the qualification first of Dars-e-Nizami – a seven-year course which concentrated on religious affairs along with proficiency in Arabic and Persian- and then the certificate of Alim.(Personally, I don’t know what Alim is). He thereafter joined Lucknow’s Takmeel-ut-Tib College of Unani. He was a struggling Hakim when he happened to recite one of his ghazals at a mushaira in Sultanpur. The ghazal was a hit with the audience and Majrooh decided to drop his fledgling medical practice and began writing poetry seriously. Soon he was a ‘regular’ at mushairas and a “shagird” i.e. disciple of the then top name in Urdu Mushairas viz: Jigar Moradabadi.

Today (21 may 2019) is the rememberance day of Subodh Mukherji (14 April 1921 – 21 May 2005). Nowadays, we generally believe that the golden era of HFM lasted from 1949 till 1980 and after that the general standards of HFM fell down several notches, never to recover again.

When I was growing up in 1970s, I felt that this deterioration of HFM had started in 1970s itself. Some of the songs that later were considered classics were regarded by mediocre by me during those days. For instance, the songs of “Do Chor”(1972) were mediocre for me. Song like Yaari ho gayi yaar se lak tunoo tunoo was jarring to my ears. “Sanyaasi” (1974) songs were downright mediocre as far as I was concerned.

Hullo Atuldom

Happy Holi!

Some movies have a lot of memories attached to them. Yash Chopra’s “Chaandni” is one such movie. The year was 1989 and I had been to Mumbai (maayka) for my delivery. So, I had a lot of free time when I could interact with all my friends and neighbours like never before (and never have I had a similar opportunity too) 😉 that made that visit to Mumbai special. For those Atulites who know me- I had shifted out of Mumbai post marriage and so the term “visit to Mumbai”.

Getting back to “Chaandni” – those were the days when there were VCRs in many home and people used to rent Video Cassettes of movies which they couldn’t see in the theatres. I have seen a few movies in that way in the company of my neighbour’s family and more importantly their son. Their son was a year or two older to me so he was a mentor, guide, friend, idol and so many other things for me. To start off (as was the norm in those times) he was my Rakhi bro but we had a different equation between the two of us. He being my idol – I started liking Rekha- his favourite and he, on his part, made an effort to like Amitabh because he doted on me. Whatever love I have for physics, all branches of mathematics, and history is because I followed his way of studying them.

This article touches upon “blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)” but this article is not part of that series. It is not possible to post an article in this series Today (16 march 2019), because movies of all the songs (all six of them) that were covered ten years ago (on 16 march 2009) have already been YIPPEED by now. 🙂

This blog ten year challenge (2009-2019) was started to serve some purpose, though we were not fully clear about them.

Let me try and enumerate them one by one.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 17
————————————————

‘Joshila-1973’ is another movie which I remember to have watched around end of seventies. It was screened during the weekly screening of movies at our ‘colony club’ where we stayed at that time. I never got a chance to watch it again. However, its heart touching song ‘Kiska rasta dekhe ai dil ai saudaayi’ became a permanent memory associated with this movie. This also became to be the most popular and famous song from this movie. Very aptly this movie was launched on this blog with this Kishore Kumar song on 15.03.2009.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 7
————————————————

On this day ten years ago (viz on 20 february 2009), six songs from six different movies were presented. Four of these movies have since been YIPPEED in the blog. Of the remaining two movies, one is from 1938 and another is from 1983. The 1938 movie (Shreet Singer) has two songs left to be covered and these songs are not available as far as I am aware.

So that leaves us with the 1983 movie viz “Sweekaar Kiya Maine” as the only eligible movie for our blog 10 year challenge.
