What is the most popular drink in India ? Tea, or ‘Chai”, as they call it in Hindi and many other Indian and foreign languages. If you visit and Indian household or office, you are likely to be served “chai”. When you go to a railway station, then the most ubiquitous vwndor you may come across is the itinerant teaseller one who sells his goods while carring a kettle of tea and shouting “Chai, garam chai” in his characteristic manner which has remnained unchanged over several generations.

“Pyaasi Shaam” (1969) is a Kewaljeet Productions movie which was directed by Amar Kumar. The cast of this movie included names like Sunil Dutt, Sharmila Tagore, Feroz Khan, Anjali Kadam, Dhumal, Sunder, Vimal Ahuja, Manmohan Krishna, Kamal Kapoor, Birbal, Om Prakash etc.

Karva chauth is a festival mainly associated with womenfolk, and as a result it is often forgotten by men. It is similar to men forgetting their wedding anniversaries, wife’s birthday etc. What does one do, when one realises this fact late ? One hurries up to make amends. And that is what I am trying to do just now. I have realised late that today is Karwa chauth festival, and so at this late hour, I am trying to push through some karwa chauth festival songs. 🙂

I am aware of a 1954 movie called “Mastaana” (1954). Now, thanks to the lyrics of a song, which were sent to be by Prakashchnadra, I am now become aware of another movie of the same name which was released in 1970.

In any field, just having the skills for the job is not enough. Good PR skills and being in the good books of those who matter is paramount. Being able to stand for one’s rights and getting it too is a tight rope walk that few people may have perfected. Among lyricists, the top few managed to have their say, but those who were in the lower rung in the pecking order had it difficult.

When I was growing up a a pre teen and later teenage kid in 1970s, I, alongwith the rest of India was a big fan of Kishore Kumar. Rafi, the erstwhile dominant male playback singer of he previous two decades found himself virtually jobless for nearly one year, before he began to get singing assignments again.

“Teasing” songs where the hero teases the heroine while singing a roadside Romeo genre of song is not quite my cup of tea, especially when the hero is someone like Rajendra Kumar. But I am prepared to condone such teasing when the hero is someone like Shammi Kapoor or Kishore Kumar. Who said that I am impartial in my likings of actors. 😀 Yes,I am objective and impartial in my likings only when it comes to singers, not actors. 🙂
