It occurs to me today that. . we are today reaching that point in time when this world has been bereft of Rafi Sb’s physical presence now, for almost that duration of time that this world was blessed and more complete with his presence as a singer known to the listeners. For an active career that lasted about three and a half decades, it is now about the same amount of time that he has not been with us. And his legacy grows stronger.

Remembering Rafi Sb on the anniversary of his passing away today (31st July).

Now this gets cosmopolitically interesting. She is from a Keralite family that settled in Mumbai about a century ago; herself she is born and brought up in Mumbai, got married to a gentleman from Tamilnadu (I think he won’t mind if we call him Peevesie’s Dad), and currently settled in Bangalore. (Maybe she can head a movement for national integration). Interestingly, today she is back in her hometown – Cochin, as this write up gets published. But that is just for a short weekend vacation, she assures me.

Four M’s and Prem Dhawan. That makes a list of songs that are the most often played, on the days of national significance – 15th August (Independence Day) and 26th January (Republic Day). The first M is Mohammed Rafi – “Ae Watan Ae Watan, Humko Teri Qasam”(‘Shaheed’, 1965). The second M is Mukesh –“Chodo Kal Ki Baaten” (‘Hum Hindustani’, 1960). The third M is Manna Dey – “Ae Mere Pyaare Watan” (‘Kabuliwaala’, 1961). And the fourth M is Mahendra Kapoor – “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola, Mera Rang De” (again from ‘Shaheed’, 1965). This, and so many more fabulous creations from the pen of this versatile multi-talented artists – it makes you wonder why his name is not listed in the same league as Sahir, Majrooh, Shailendra, Anand Bakshi etc.

Remembering Prem Dhawan on the anniversary of his birth. (13th June).

Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 6
=====================

This is a unique RaagaMaalika composed and ably written by music director Ravindra Jain. I have no words to describe the greatness of Ravindra Jain in his excellence to create this truly very different type of composition. His selection of singer Yesudas for this very difficult heavy classical genre is also very very appropriate.

Hullo to all Atulites

Morning times are the times when people generally listen to Bhajans and Pravachans and I am no different. Till a few years back my mornings used to begin with switching on the radio to Vividh Bharati or Radio Ceylon and music used to play through the day. Then the FM channels took over and there used to be a Channel Switching (or changing if I may say) exercise in between the various radio programmes and my own work activities. To add to the confusion, suddenly, TV went 24 hours along with giving us a bouquet of music channels to listen to. And then what happens to a music Buff like me? It was and is the biggest distraction for me especially during working hours.

This article is the 9200th song post in the blog.

Countdown is in progress, and we are slowly inching forward to the magic milestone.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 9200th post, to all readers and friends. Celebration time once again, and as I said, we are now just seven more century jumps away from that magical number of 10,000 songs on this blog. By the current accepted rate of comfort, we should be making it sometimes in April time frame. Gosh, the built up for an exciting interlude is now setting in.

“Sunayna” (1979) was a Rajshree Productions movie. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Hiren Nag. The story of the movie was inspired from Charlie Chaplin’s “City lights” (1931). I must say that I quite loved watching the movie in a then newly built mini sized movie hall in Ranchi in 1979. One of the lasting impressions of this movie in my mind include the extremely hummable title song viz. Sunayna sunayna..aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho aur main trumhe dekhte huye dekhoon. The other lasting impression was Jagdeep playing a fellow jailbird of Naseeruddin Shah who tries to help Naseeruddin Shah escape out of jail. Instead of Naseeruddin Shah, Jagdeep finds himself out of the jail. And from then onwards Jagdeep tries very hard to go back inside the jail, but to no avail. 🙂
