When Bollywood movie music was in its early decades, it was carefully nursed and nurtured by some of the finest musical talents available. Most of the music dirrectors in the industry at that time had solid grooming in classical music. They were quality conscious while creating their music, and they were quite innovative and imaginative too.

In Bollywood movies, music directors tended to create songs based on the range and singing ability of the singers. Singers with lesser range and lesser singing abilities got simpler songs to sing, whereas singers with greater skills were often asked to sing difficult songs.

Though this song is from a movie of 1961, I first heard this song just a few days ago. And since then, I have come to the conclusion that this song must be one of the greatest songs created in Bollywood movies. And I am really surprised that this song is not all that well known. A song like this should form part of all the “all time classics” that music companies come up with periodically.

Though western music was introduced in Bollywood music as early as in 1940s itself, such music remained peripheral for nearly two decades or so. It was only in the second half of 1960s that western music began to take centrestage in Bollywood movie music.
