Rafi Sb.

So much written about him. So much said. The words have ended. But the emotions continue to flow. So much more remains unsaid. So much more still waits. But the articulation struggles to create new epithets, define new qualifiers that may go beyond, and say a little more about this Divine Voice, about this persona so aptly described as God’s Own.

And yet, some more, little more. As it is, there are still many more songs in his voice that have to be brought on board here on our blog. I bring today a short ghazal of three couplets, that is indeed an abbreviated version. The poet who wrote these lines is Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor. As a character in history – the last Emperor of the glorious Mughal dynasty, he appears in some films. One of them is ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954).

My first real jaan-pehchaan with this actor happened in 1970. The film – ‘Anand’. He plays the role of Dr. Prakash Kulkarni, friend of Dr. Bhaskar Bannerji (Amitabh Bachchan). His role was impressive and touching. At the climax of the film, when Anand is battling for his last breaths, Bhaskar is not present. He has gone on a last ditch hunt for a miracle medicine. Prakash is the doctor present in the room besides Renu (Sumita Sanyal), attending to Anand. It is 4.15 early morning. The final moments arrive. Anand requests for the spool tape player to be put on. Prakash realizes – the worst is about to happen. He asks the attending nurse to prepare an injection. And while the tape is playing Anand calls out for Babu Moshai, and his breathing ceases. Prakash is stunned and cannot move. There is horror and grief and dejection writ large on his face. These moments, this expression, the welling of tears in his eyes, and the unwilling acceptance of a final defeat – left an imprint on my mind strong enough to now remember the name of this actor – Ramesh Deo.

In the beginning years of this millennium, we among the last dwellers of last millennium, were kept mesmerized with old Hindi film songs.  This was a willing intoxication, which made it possible to deal all difficulties, happiness, sadness, tragedies etc. that life chose to throw at us.   Often the songs that played randomly in a collection of songs playing on computer would become a subject of discussion.

Memories of visit to London in September 2021

This post has been a long time in arriving actually.  We went to UK not as tourist, but to see family, mainly the daughter of the family and the new grand-daughter.  We came back to Mumbai in October’21.  Lot of water has flown down the bridge since then and the grand daughter is growing by leaps and bounds since we were with her, by the grace of Almighty.

I started this series in December 2020 with great enthusiasm, just after Geeta Dutt’s 900th song post had appeared in the blog.  The following 6 posts appeared in the series up to June 2021.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 09
———————————————————

96th birth anniversary of O. P. Nayyar

Today, finally we arrive at a Rafi-Asha duet on the occasion of 96th birth anniversary of legendary composer of beautiful songs, OP Nayyar. I am sure, I have long back looked at this duet and saved the link multiple times in different laptops/folders.

I, for one, am most happy that this was somehow missed by all regular contributors to the blog, and not yet posted.  So that I am having a quintessential Rafi-Asha duet by OPN, which is written by Qamar Jalaalabadi.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 08
———————————————–

14 Jan – Remembrance Day of Chitragupta

Chitragupta has recorded 260 plus songs with Rafi Sahab for Hindi and Bhojpuri films during the period 1950 to 1980.  Having gone through the whole list of these songs, I have come to the conclusion that I am a creature of radio.  The songs heard on radio long back ring a bell and I am drawn to them.  There are other well-known songs, which I had not heard on the radio as a child, they don’t make this short list of my personal favorites.

I count the minutes the days the hours. . .
I count the stars. . .

Days, then weeks, then months – on to years and decades. The march of time incessantly continues. Superimposed on this unremitting progression is a calendar that allows us to measure passages of time. The philosophers of yore had no tools other than observation and contemplation, by which they used to measure natural phenomena. And then this measurement and contemplation over long periods of time uncovered patterns of celestial movements which tied into the the design of changing climate on earth. And thus was born the concept of calendar and measures of years. Over a period of time it got refined into a detailed structure that we now see as twelve months and 365 days. Of course with further refinements of leap years and leap centuries to make accurate adjustments to synchronize the this framework with the precise movement of Sun in our skies.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 21
—————————————————

My favorite genre of Rafi song is not really a ‘bhajan’ per se but the the period often professed by me to find the most appealing of all periods is the 50’s. And for some time now, I have not posted a 50’s Rafi solo. A song again on a higher octave, this is a devotional song sung with chorus, in the movie ‘Aastik’ (1956). Music Director is Narayanan Dutt and it is written by SP Kalla.
