When the year 1952 dawned, Geeta ji had been singing in Hindi films now for about 6 years, and had an incredible 500+ songs already behind her. On the other hand, the soon to be famous OP Nayyar had composed the background score for Kaneez in 1949, and this film, Aasmaan, was going to be his debut as an independent music director. He became known as a maverick composer and the Melody Maestro in the coming years. OP Nayyar went through a phase in the 50s when All India Radio shunned his music as being too trendy, and Radio Ceylon became the remote beacon for music lovers to listen to his songs. In the mid to late 1950s, he became the highest paid composer in the industry, and the first one to command contracts worth one lakh (and more) for composing.

“Ek Saal” (1957) is a movie starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. This song has some nice songs in it as was usually the case with most movies, and more so with movies that had music composed by Ravi. I have already discussed four great songs fro this movie including the all time classic Sab kuchh luta ke hosh mein aaye to kyaa kiyaa.

I may think that I know a lot about old Hindi movies and their songs, but I often find myself humbled as I find my knowledge to be quite insignificant and inadequate vis a vis the knowledge possessed by the visitors of this blog. Shabnam (1964) is a fantasy adventure, a mix of comedy, action and intrigue in the royal palace. With the combination of Mehmood (still trying at that time to succeed as a hero), Sheikh Mukhtar, Jeevan, Helen, Vijay Laxmi, Mukri, Mohan Choti etc., the roles and story line is almost predictable. Memsaab’s blog carries a very interesting review of this movie (click here to go to the review). The movie has had a pretty successful run in its time, in the B circuit release cinema houses. But more than that, this movie is remembered for its music, rather it is a musical blockbuster, as Atul ji has mentioned in his post for one of the songs ‘Har Nazar Mein Sau Afsaane’.

Look what a remarkable gem I discovered just a few hours ago ! This song is from “Pardesi” (1957). Though I have discussed two songs from this movie already in the past, I was not aware of the fact that this movie was an Indo Soviet production which was made in Hindi as well as Russian languages. In the movie, a Russian man (played by Oleg Strizhenov) comes to India and falls in love with an Indian village belle, played by Nargis.
