Today is India’s independence day. On this occasion, I greet all Indians, wherever they are, a very happy independence day.
On this occasion, here is a very special patriotic song. This song was written by a patriot who actually participated in the freedom struggle and was hanged by Britishers for his role in the Kakori conspiracy.

The title “Dushman” seems to be quite a popular title of Hindi movie makers. I am aware of at least three movies of this name, starring K L Saigal, Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna. In addition, other movies of this title may have been produced later too.

Shabnam (1964) is a fantasy adventure, a mix of comedy, action and intrigue in the royal palace. With the combination of Mehmood (still trying at that time to succeed as a hero), Sheikh Mukhtar, Jeevan, Helen, Vijay Laxmi, Mukri, Mohan Choti etc., the roles and story line is almost predictable. Memsaab’s blog carries a very interesting review of this movie (click here to go to the review). The movie has had a pretty successful run in its time, in the B circuit release cinema houses. But more than that, this movie is remembered for its music, rather it is a musical blockbuster, as Atul ji has mentioned in his post for one of the songs ‘Har Nazar Mein Sau Afsaane’.

Look what a remarkable gem I discovered just a few hours ago ! This song is from “Pardesi” (1957). Though I have discussed two songs from this movie already in the past, I was not aware of the fact that this movie was an Indo Soviet production which was made in Hindi as well as Russian languages. In the movie, a Russian man (played by Oleg Strizhenov) comes to India and falls in love with an Indian village belle, played by Nargis.

A wonderful gem of a duet from Hamdard (1953). This is such a wonderful classical jugalbandi, such a pleasure to listen with your eyes closed. It is almost a divine composition, a signature composition by Anil Da, with more than one raga blended seamlessly into a single flow. A virtuous melody, and a pleasure to listen to.

If one creates one or two masterpiece songs in a movie that I suppose the creators of such songs in that movie could be justified in taking it easy while creating the remaining songs. But that is not how they worked in the (G)olden days. The created one gem after another in the same movie, as if this was the last movie of their careers. And they continued it for their other movies as well for their entire careers that lasted a few decades. and then there were many others who worked in the same way. No wonder we are left with a huge body of quality music that we can keep exploring for decades, without being able to exhaust it.
