I was searching for this difficult to find song for more than a year. This song is from an obscure mythological movie called “Chakradhaari” (1954). The movie may be obscure, as also its songs, but this particular song had broken the C grade barrier as far as its popularity is concerned. This song in fact had rubbed shoulders with the songs of A grade movies like “Naagin”, “Aar Paar”,”Taxi Driver” etc. This song had finished 13th in Binaca geetmala final of 1954.

I have heard the “better known” songs from “Door Ki Aawaaz” (1964) but that is not saying much, since this movie apparently had many more great songs than what met my eyes (and ears) till now. I see that Raja had given me a farmaish for two songs from this movie that I had never herad before.

In Bollywood movies, most songs are picturised on lead actors, but sometimes songs are picturised on bit actors playing beggars/ mandicants/ sadhus etc who would be shown singing a philosophical song as a leading lady would be shown suffering. This song is one such song. The lady (who is she !) finds her helpless and she is seen arriving at a temple as a last resort, where this song is sung.

“Shama Parwaana” (1954) was one of the first movies of Shammi Kapoor. And in this movie, he was paired up opposite a top heroine of the day, namely Suraiyya. In Bollywood movies, leading ladies as often treated as pieces of decoration. It is heratening to see that leading lads too can get the same treatment. In Shammi Kapoor’s earlier movies, especially where he was pitted against star names like Suraiyya, Suraiyya got all the limelight and Shammi Kapoor was left playing the second fiddle. 🙂

“Waapas”(1969) is a movie that had unknown actors in it and the movie sank without a trace. Those were the days when the Indian movie audience were too immature and simplistic in their choices and any movie even slightly off the mainstream track tended to flounder badly.

In movies, only the young and beautiful (read hero and heroine) are seen romancing, which to my mind is not fair. even old and ugly people also have the right to romance. So I always rejoice when villains, comedians and bit actors are shown romancing in movie songs.
