In my last post on the song from “Zehreela Insaan” (1974), I gave a short synopsis of the movie. This song, filmed on Rishi Kapoor and Moushumi Chatterjee, shows them in happier times. Since they are playing college students here, they have most probably bunked classes to meet and sing a song. This seems to be a popular haunt with the main protagonist of the film. Three songs of the film are shot here.

Here is another solo of Rafi Sahab from the film “Laila Majnu” (1976). This is a ghazal picturized as a doli song with Majnu following Laila’s doli in the desert and singing this song , imploring Laila to take with her, the prayers of the one who has been left desolate in her love. This is among the last few compositions of Madan Mohan. Lyricist is Saahir Ludhianvi. Master of ghazals as Madan Mohan is known as, this is a brilliant creation of all three legends. A teetotaler simpleton, a cynical intellectual and a broken genuis alcoholic. A strange combination if there were any.

The other day someone commented on this blog, that “Dosti” (1964) is a film which has all but one songs sung by Rafi. The commentor had also queried if Atul ji could name a film with all song sung by Rafi. When I saw that comment, the first movie that came to my mind was ‘Sargam'(1980). With Rishi Kapoor singing all the songs and Jaya Prada playing a mute girl, it had 7 songs, 3 Rafi solos and 4 Rafi-Lata Duets. Than I remembered that even ‘Laila Majnu” had all but one Rafi song.

“Kabhi Kabhi” (1976) was a movie that I became aware of when its title song began to play on radio. I found the title song quite antiquated in its tune. Those were the days when anything not sung by Kishore Kumar or not composed by R D Burman was regarded as old by me. I found that the music of this movie was composed by someone called Khayyam. and that is how I became familiar with this name.

A few days back on the occasion of Amitabh and Rekha’s birthday I spoke of how famous or popular or well received their pairing was in Bollywood movies. There were other such equally popular jodis. Viz. Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra- Moushmi Chaterjee, Rajesh Khanna with Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna with Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna with Asha Parekh etc in my growing up years. Actually I thought that Jaya Bhaduri never made a geat pair on screen with Amitabh, I liked her more with Sanjeev Kumar or even Jeetendra. There were popular pairing in the previous generation of stars too. But I think we have more knowledgeable people in our group to list them. Now what made a pairing popular was how well they looked together or how had their movie fared at the box office or how much recall value their songs had.
